Can't you get two finger scrolling with OS X? I know it is unstable and not recommended, but it is possible.

Check out the Dell Synaptics driver for the XPS 1710.
Thats my other notebook, and it does support multitouch and DOES work with the mini 9!
No other driver (OEM, DELL, or Synaptics) seems to have the same features as this driver for the XPS 1710...

I tried it on windows xp and I couldn't find any options for two finger scrolling.

I just installed it on my 9 and it appears to work exactly like the original Dell driver- horizontal and vertical scrolling work the same. I haven't discovered any other features...yet.

I'm bumping this thread because I just discovered that this driver does let you hold one finger on the left side of the touchpad (scroll area) and use another to pull the screen temporarily up and down. Same for left to right. Is this what you guys mean by multitouch?

The synaptics hardware does not support multi touch. Its just that simple. You get a temporary movement by placing a second finger because it things your finger moved to the middle of the two fingers. It reports this change to the os and it moves the mouse / scrolls. When you release the finger, it reports that your finger moved back to its original position.

The when the driver asks the touchpad firmware what sort of stuff it supports, it responds with ONLY the following bit set, "capPalmDetect"
What this means is that the touch pad can detect the following:
"Finger of normal width"
"Very wide finger or palm"
The touchpad does not tell the os that it supports "capMultiFinger." As such, it is unable to report two, three or more fingers on the pad.

IF someone wanted to, they could use the pressure sensitivity aspect of the touchpad to emulate multiple fingers detection, however it would be unreliable. Also, the synaptics touchpad does not report multiple finger positions even if it could detect multiple fingers, so it it not truly multi touch (aka, the only thing you could do is two finger scrolling).
