Default Multitouch touchpad - 11-10-2008, 11:55 AM

Hello all.

I've read that Synaptics released some multitouch drivers for their touchpads, for OME.
The Acer One, for example, have such drivers.

I've setup the generic drivers from Synaptics (not the Dell ones) and they're not multitouch (under XP).

Are the official Dell drivers multitouch-enabled?
If not, does anyone know which one we could use to get multitouch?

Dell's drivers aren't or else they'd be crowing about it and charging us 50-100 dollars more for the "feature"!

(I kid, Dell. I kid. Relax.)

That being said, I'd love to see the enhancements multitouch would bring!

If you continue to investigate this please keep us informed, okay?

I'll do a clone of me SSD (in case I break everything 8)) and try some drivers from other brands (OEM from Synaptics).

Anyone tried this : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=218872 ?

Just tried them.
They install nicely (and work) on my XPS M1330.
Installation fails on the Mini9...

I guess we need to cheat the .inf files...

I've just tried TwoFingerScroll.exe (http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll) that I found on the Thinkpad support forum.

At least, the error message is quite clear...
When launched, it says "Driver support for multiple fingers is already enabled but the driver still doesn't report multiple fingers. Either you haven't restarted the system yet or your TouchPad doesn't support multiple fingers".

This was with the official 10.1.8 (currently downloadable from Synaptics) driver pack and registry hack found here : http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 898#458898. The TwoFingersGestures and ThreeFingersGestures features are not accessible in the Synaptics tool.

Very same error message with the official 11.2.4 drivers (found in another forum). The TwoFingersGestures and ThreeFingersGestures features are not accessible in the Synaptics tool either.

I don't know if there's really an hardware limitation or if it's a driver issue.
More tests to come.

As I was asked, here are the results of my researches on this.

The Synaptic firmware (7.0) in the Mini9 touchpad forbids the multitouch driver to work (even with multitouch enabled drivers/registry under XP Pro).

It's the same problem with 6.5 firmware found on some other laptop touchpads.

6.2 firmware (the one I have in my XPS M1330) allows you to use multitouch flawlessly.

I did not found a way to downgrade the touchpad firmware and I did not test under Ubuntu/OSX/your OS of choice.

I don't mean to bring back the old post...

But according to Engadget article, (http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/05/l...s-s10-netbook/) Lenovo is adding multi touch support to their S10 line up.

Since Mini 9 already ships with multi-touch pad, howcome it's not supported?

so the lack of multitouch is possibly just a software limitation? wow. its odd that both dell limited this and no one has produced third party firmware to get multi touch to work yet...

Hey,
I noticed that the dell mini 10 supports multi finger touchpad, if it's just software limitation those drivers might work with the mini 9 or 12.

I recall reading that the Mini 10 used a touchpad from a manufacturer other than Synaptics.
