I have a 10V, and I was able to install 7 on it without having to wipe out the hidden partition on the drive.

I always use Acronis True Image Home (www.acronis.com) to make an image of the entire disk before upgrading. It's always the first thing I do with a new computer so I can restore to out-of-the-box new if I need to. Once I do my upgrades, it's also a good product for keeping on-going comprehensive images from which I can restore, if necessary. Acronis sells a less expensive "netbook" version of their software but I can't remember its limitations. You can do a side-by-side comparison on their web site.

loading win 7 wll not effect the dell partition unless you delete the wrong thing, they are seperate partitions, just format the partition with XP on it, the other will remain untouched...if you do it right you will be fine...

I'm not sure why you'd want to keep the partition. If you screw up the disk later you can always just start over again and reload Win7. For every mini I do for my clients, the first thing I do is a fresh install of the operating system and delete all the Dell crap. I download all the latest drivers to a flash drive and load them after the fresh install. A lot of the time the dell partition doesn't even have the latest drivers or even the correct drivers. Plus, you know there will be updated drivers in a couple of months. Keep you operating system and all your drivers on a bootable flash drive and you can reinstall anytime. Besides, you will not want to go from Win7 to XP. XP stinks.
