Hello,

I got my Dell a few months ago and decided to put OSX on it to see what it was like.

I have enjoyed it but I can't help but think I can get more out of it with Linux.
I have Ubuntu on my Desktop and it is smashing, no problems, and seems to use little RAM and processor even though I am running lots of Apps, surfing etc.

I am considering in the future to change my Dell mini to Linux, in everyone's opinions what are the current best and most stable releases for the Netbook?

I have looked at UNR, read about Open Suse, and also put some thought into Xubuntu and Mint.

Out of the box, which will give me the most stable environment for what I intend to use it for, which is mainly music and videos on the go, and the odd document edit here and there.

Jolicloud is currently the main OS on my mom's mini9 and runs side by side with windows xp on my mini1012. I have been running it for a little over a month and I must mention it is very stable and aesthetically pleasing. It resembles UNR with a black theme instead of brown theme. It is tailored around netbooks so all the hardware works out of the box. The mini9 has a 8GB stec ssd and 512MB ram, I notice it runs much smoother and has a quicker response than XP. I enjoy it so much, I will be removing XP from my 1012 and will be installing jolicloud. The 10v with 2GB ram should fly.
I suggest you download the iso and usb maker from the jolicloud website and try it out for yourself.

PS. I have tried and installed LinuxMint on desktops and laptops. It is a great Distro. But for netbooks, jolicloud really is impressive.

PPS. The Forums and Support for jolicloud is somewhat lacking but the OS itself is great.

Ubuntu should run fine (maybe you'll have to install the wireless driver) and is a great choice if it's also what you're running on your desktop.

I have tried dozens of distros on my Mini 9; they all basically work so whatever you feel will be the most productive and familiar environment for you.

Ubuntu works great as a netbook os. It really depends on what you prefer: a netbook interface or a traditional desktop. Get the .iso of each UNR and Ubuntu and put it on a thumbdrive and give it a shot. WIFI will probably not work out of the box if it doesn't simply go to synaptic activate source code under software sources, then search bcmwl and install the kernel source. Reopen restricted drivers manager and it should work fine. More info at

I have tried the Jolicloud, UNR, Xubuntu and Mint from the live usb boot. I decided on Mint for the time being I liked the interface and it seems very nice and smooth so far!

Mint..Very nice. I wish Mint made a NBR. IT would be an instant hit..

Get UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads and play with wide variety of distributions on live USB. Mint is a must.

Not the 10V, but I'm using a 1012 and I've tested a number of distros on it, of which (for now) Mint 9 is my default. I wrote a long review of the different distros here:

I recently replaced my mini with a sony vaio and a Xoom. I want to put Ubuntu/Mint/Slak/Xubuntu linux os on the little guy but I am meeting heavy resistance. I have followed the steps to a T according to the ubuntu website, numerous videos, and forum how tos. I am using netbootin and flashing the .iso on to a 2g USB stick. Ubuntu stops before configuration prompts and Xubuntu fails to find the CD for install?

Any help or can someone point me in a direction?

If you need more information to help trouble shoot just let me know.

This is my first go around with linux and I would like to iron it out before I make the step up to the other devices.

What version of Ubuntu are you installing? Do you have a cd on your Sony or is it USB only like the Mini 9
