Lightbulb SATA mini PCIe card for Mini 9 - MacOS and Windows? - 10-31-2010, 06:38 PM

anyone seen this card

MPX-3132| 1507890 | Mini-PCI Express (mini-PCIe) Serial ATA RAID Card

since it's a si3132 based card and there are already drivers available for that chip on MacOS, could you add the card and have it provide 2 x SATA ports for a hackintosh Mini 9?

I'd assume it would be as easy on Windows/Linux.

Anyone know what the performance of the Mini 9 mini PCIe slot is?

There are other mini PCIe cards on the same section of the site for USB 3 and Firewire but i'm not sure if the drivers are available for MacOS so haven't really looked closely at those

Weird device. I dunno for sure, but it should work in a Mini's WiFi slot. Power for the drives would still be an issue.

As for speed, a Mini PCIe slot is a PCIe x1 slot. Since the Mini 9 has an older chipset, it's gonna be v1, which means 250MBps. I dunno how close the Mini 9 comes to that, though.

I note that the vendor has a compatibility chart with some motherboards listed as "not supported". No guarantees it would work in the 9. I have to ask "what's the point?" in the Mini 9 - you'd have to run cables to external drives somehow (I suppose a 1.8" drive could be put in the WWAN slot, but...) Unknown if the Mini would boot from an attached device here.

i was thinking along the lines of getting a small format ssd in there as you mentioned.

if the PCIe slot is capable of running at anything like the theoretical 250M that reflex mentioned, then it might be a significant performance improvement over the current options available.

appreciate that there are a lot of unknowns tho.

cant find a supplier in the uk so not sure it'll go anywhere for me right now.
