Default Intel Atom Z550? - 04-08-2009, 02:56 PM

Is it possible/worth it to attempt a CPU replacement for the mini 9? 2GHz with 2Gb of ram and a Runcore 64 would make the mini 9 a force to be reckoned with.

The idea is intriguing, anybody else have any thoughts on this? The extra CPU kick would make me think about it!

If you plan on also revamping the thermal padding, using quality thermal grease and consider doing other mods to allow for the CPU to remain cool

And then there is the whole compatibility thing... hopefully it works!

I think you will have to unsolder the processor from the motherboard as I believe it does not use a socket... and you'll need some expensive equipment to do that to BGA connections and not destroy the other components...

LGSilva is the only one that knows what he is talking about in this thread.

The new Z550 is a 3W tdp processor, the current N270 is a 2w tdp proc. cooling isn't an issue. But yes, the processor is soldered to the motherboard in a BGA.

Moral of the story = It's not going to happen. Wait for a Z550 based netbook, it's that simple.

And the 2ghz bump isn't going to show much tangable performance increase. Wait for the dual core atom based chips to hit netbooks.

and you also need someone who is actually going to sell the CPUs. Intel is known to only sell the Atoms to PC makers and also bundle it with the chipset.

Assuming that you had a Z550 in hand, that you had access to rework equipment to desolder and resolder a BGA, and that the pinouts matched between the Z550 and the N270... BIOS is unlikely to recognize the new processor since Dell would not have had any reason to add support.
