I expect it's part of the sensor that detects when the lid is closed.

The Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card is completely separate from the GMA3150 video "card".

The Broadcom card just decodes video on an application's request. It's up to the application to send the output somewhere useful (i.e. to the video card for display).

Since the Broadcom card has no special connection to the video card, the card should work in any computer with an available MiniPCIe slot and drivers. But be aware that many "Mini PCIe" slots are crippled or mislabeled.

hi everyone,

I re-installed win7 Home Pre and in the device manager, there are always a "Multimedia Controller" and "Video Controller" not installed correctly. I tried numberous times to update to the newest driver for the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card and video card, but they still show as not installed correctly.

My screen's max resolution is still at 1024x600. but somehow I heard the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card and HD screen are bundled together. However my product detail from Dell doesn't show a HD screen, and I don't remember there was such an option of HD screen at the time of ordering, only the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card.

Could anyone help me on the two mysterious devices?

Thanks a lot.

I upgraded my screen recently and I'm happy with the results. Sure a lot easier to do than the line of crap I got from Dell tech support when I asked about doing an LCD upgrade. Not much more I can do with this mini, but it serves the purpose of a being a convenient and portable netbook. The screen upgrade makes using some appliactions I loaded on it a while lot easier to use.

I have a 1st generation 1012 and would like to do this screen upgrade. How do I order the screen from Dell? I have found the screen at other sources but from what I've read here, it seems that ordering from Dell is the better choice.

Thanks,

Jim

I used a third party to get my screen and have no regrets.I found Dell to be very uncooperative and finally gave up trying to get a screen from them. I encountered a lot more tape holding down some of cables than what the LCD screen installation videos showed. Just take it slow and you should be fine. Good luck to you.

The same number you call for support but listen to the options. Give the part number to them "FOR" example RKDY3.

I gave away my 1012 to a friend and he called the other day saying the screen is bad. I ordered one RKDY3 from Dell for $64.99 + 6+env fee and plus tax and free shipping, It will cost me a total of $76.99.

I just posted on notebook review about how I feel on other suppliers. Maybe Bliss is good but I have no experience with them.

BTW, The laptop has still 80 days of warranty and I don't want the hassle of returning my friends laptop and get tampered with their tech. My coworker experienced with Dell support was horrible. Her laptop was shipped 1 thousand mile away AND NEVER GOT IT BACK. She paid for the LCD so Dell gave her a used comparable laptop.

I too mentioned that my 1012 is still under warranty (80days left) and I need it fixed. The support from India said they can not and will not ship a replacement LCD. That I have to return my netbook and if they find there is a crack on the screen I have to pay for the parts. They gave me this sales pitch for "accidental" warranty and said If I have gotten this accidental protection my laptiop screen would have been covered. So basically the built-in one year warranty is pretty much useless and only cover the cost of labor. The end userstill has to pay for these crappy parts that I think is of Chinese quality.

I hope this post help other in understanding Dell warranty. They are pretty much useless.

would it not have been easier just to order it that way in the 1st place (only for original purchasers not for 2nd/3rd hand owners)......I personally would be reluctant to buy anything from a 3rd party supplier especially one in China or Japan where product replacement/warranty is different than here in the states)..I know that there are many success stories but I think there are just as many problems also..I only post this in case there are any potential buyers out there reading this...if you want the HD screen...its easier just to order that way in the 1st place....just my 0.02
