Default My i7 M11x thread - 07-16-2010, 06:39 PM

Well I just got it today and I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread on it, my experience with it, likes dislikes etc.

So, first I have to say, after opening it the palm rest area to the left of the mouse pad does not click into the bottom, it pulls away and pushing it into place produces no click or anything that it is in place. After calling Alienware they are sending out a tech to replace the case.
Otherwise it seems to function perfectly and having a ball playing with the LED's.

Something else I've noticed, which I haven't seen on other laptops, while the power cord is plugged in, USB ports still get power. Found out with my USB powered cooling pad after shutting it down. Will be handy for charging my phone and iPod.

I have the older revision 1 - which I just brought, will be interested to see how you find
the optimus system to run. I have the cpu OC'd to 1.73 and super pi V1.5 runs in around 35 seconds 1M which is close to my old T2600 processor - noting close to the T9600 in my M6400 but would be interested to see how the I7 runs in comparison.

Enjoy your m11x I have thoroughly enjoyed mine.

Well, I hate to say it but I sold my R1 M11x. I noticed while I was in the process of selling it (the guy that bought it noticed actually) that my screen had popped out of its track on the left hand side of the screen. I'm glad I left, though the experience was a good one.

I hope the i7 performs much better than the C2D. It was good, but just not great as a primary laptop. I'm interested to hear how much the M11x has improved.

Woohoo! My shiny new 13" Macbook Pro is on its way here. I always wanted a Mac, and finally made the switch.

Farewell Alienware! I hardly knew ye...

Cheers,
Charlie

Okay, so the tech called this past Monday saying he would be out between 2 and 4. He called at 1 saying they have it as an Opti-Plex and wouldn't be able to do it, they'll have to give it to someone else. After calling Alienware again they said they'd prioritize it and get it taken care of. So the new tech called me this morning, came out, looked at it and said, ooh, that's not an Opti-Plex. The ticket had Opti-Plex and a different Service Tag, so just to check he opened the box, and sure enough, it was the M11x palmrest/upper case. Being at work I set him up in an empty office to work in, after seeing him flip it over to remove the access panel rather carelessly, I started talking about how I change LCD panels, mobos, etc etc in laptops here at work, and if he wanted to he could just leave the parts, which don't need to be returned BTW, and I'd switch it. Three signatures later I was showing him out.
So now I'll have a spare mouse pad, front LEDs, and what looks like the LED control board.
Frankly this is what I wanted Alienware to do in the first place, being such a new model I have more confidence in myself doing the job than some "certified" Dell guy saying he has to be quick, he only has 30 minutes on the parking meter.

Just take time an work with care - I'm sure I would have been told that the installation of aerials was also impossible but it can be done - just take your time and work with care.

I'm not changing anything, Alienware/Dell overnighted me a complete set of case screws, I suspect the case will be fine with screws to actually hold it together!
So I got a free palmrest and a bunch of spare screws, which should be here today.
If any of you go on other forums with M11x threads, you may want to warn people with R2 to look under the access panel and check for case screws, I see this as probably being a batch and not a single instance.

WOW - stunned the laptop was missing all those screws - I've clearly pulled mine apart and the only issue I have now is the top power cover does not seem to re-click in as firmly as it originally did I have removed and reset this numerous times and there is a noticeable gap. And you can now see a white cable going into the case from the screen for the new internal aerials for the 5530 card - my fault for using a grey cable and not thinking about that.
