Default Possible CPU Upgrade??? - 10-08-2009, 07:11 PM

I saw this as a combo with a Super Talent SSD for the Mini 9...

AMD Phenom II X4 Processor 920 (2.8GHz) AM2+, Retail...

Would this actually fit in the Mini 9? I do not know what socket the Mini 9 motherboard has.

The CPU is not upgradable (by typical users anyway) as it is a BGA assembly. Basically it is soldered to the board using tiny balls of solder. While some of the EEE crowd have been brave and had their Celerons upgraded to Pentiums, I have not seen this done on the Atom CPU's and I really dont know of any that would offer an advantage and still be compatible.

Short answer, No! Long answer, probably possible but definitely not with that cpu!

There's only one CPU which could conceivably be swapped for the Atom N270 and that is the Atom N280. You can't buy these individually and, as noted above, the CPU is soldered in and not socketed. This is typical of notebook/netbook computers.

That would be the ultimate Mini 9 mod, if someone got ahold of an N280 and soldered it on!!

I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference, to be honest. The BIOS might not accept it either.
