Question Flash Update Coming! - 09-29-2009, 03:40 PM

NEW NEWS as of 11/16:

The flash update arrived (10.1) and I'm experiencing much better hulu on my mini-9. not HD, but i can get full screen without excessive studdering. Check it out:

http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

OLD news:
A new version of flash is due out next month. See this Gizmodo article:

GPU-Accelerated Flash Player Provides Smooth HD Video, Arrives Next Month - GPU-accelerated flash - Gizmodo

I'm not very wise on the area of netbook graphics, but I do know Hulu sucks on my Mini 9. Will this update make me happy, or will Hulu continue to suck on the Mini 9 as this update won't help me?

Since the Dell Mini 9 doesn't use an NVidia GPU, it probably won't help, unless the optimizations are so generic that any GPU could potentially take advantage of it.

It's the usual 'we'll need more details'

It is said to work with the Broadcom Crystal HD Decoder card. I'll believe it when I see it.

But if it does that will be sweet for HP Mini users and anyone with the Broadcom card here.

So I assume the Mini 9 does not use the Broadcom Crystal HD Decoder card?

<Sigh> I just wish Hulu worked on the Mini 9...

No it doesn't. You can put one in the WIFI slot if you are willing to use a USB wifi dongle. I am going to install the wifi dongle internally so its not a huge loss.

The card is Broadcom BCM70012, they sell on ebay for pretty cheap.

Odd...I have no problem watching Hulu at all. I have watched a lot of Hulu and Fancast on my Mini9s.

Interesting. I hope this will work with the latest nvidia desktop cards too. I have a pentium 4 processor in my desktop and sometimes i feel it could do with a boost when playing youtube videos in hd (could just be my imagination though) and if not now, well, i guess ever-higher-quality flash video will appear in time so it could be useful for the futuer.

There's a brief demo of Flash 10.1 exploiting the Broadcom card here:
Adobe Demos Flash 10.1 on Multiple Platforms. (Video) | UMPCPortal - Ultra Mobile Personal Computing

Now, where to buy it? I can't find any on ebay.

Thanks. Apparently my ebay search-fu is low. Very low. In my defense, a search of 'broadcom crystal' (my first try) still returns 0 results. But I must have typed the model number wrong in later attempts. Thanks again.
