First backup your data. Then, I'd just download an ISO from ubuntu.com. Then burn it to CD or use a tool like Unetbootin to put it on a flash drive (or other USB storage device). Then boot up the installer and let it use the entire drive when prompted.

To boot off a external device, you might need to press a key at the Dell splash screen right after boot up. On my 9, 2 starts the BIOS setup, 0 gives you a boot device menu. On my larger Dell, F2 and F12 serve the same purposes.

I'm not sure what keys the 10v uses. Pay attention during the Dell splash screen, it probably indicates the exact keys.

Try the drive on another computer.

What is the nature of your BT problems?

I've done lots of these DM-10Vs and have encountered some BT problems, but have always managed to get them resolved. Frankly, I'd rather have OS X working and not have to return to Ubuntu.
