Question Dell Mini 1012 - Not up to the task for YouTube? - 05-16-2016, 07:55 PM

Hello I have a friends Mini 1012 here which I upgraded to 2 GB and replaced the dead / stock HD with a 500GB Seagate 7200rpm HD, Clean install of Win 7 32bit and all updates installed.

The problem is when using YouTube it can't seem to handle it even when selecting 360P video quality (windowed or fullscreen) it constantly drops frames (choppy) I've tried it in Chrome and Firefox, I know the CPU isn't the best but I was curious if this was 'normal' for the hardware.

I also made sure CPU usage wasn't abnormally high when idle and it appears normal (fluctuates between 2 - 4% usage when idle)
On the other hand it has no problem playing 720P .MKV files (MPC-HC player).

It is still using the stock 1024x600 screen as well.

Any input appreciated

Are you sure it isn't a network bandwidth issue?

I tried it over wired connection (Xfinity) and it didn't help, but looks like a lot of the problem was with the AdBlock Plus plugin, I didn't realize it has some CPU usage involved, uninstalling it allowed just enough reserve CPU to run 360P fine now and 480P with minor dropped frames.

(Right click in the Youtube video window and select "Stats for Nerds" if you want to view the dropped frames counter.)

Thanks.

Use Google Chrome or Torch. Download Chrome User-Agent Switcher

Before navigating to YouTube, select 'Android > AndroidKitKat'. This will fool YouTube into thinking you are running Android OS, and you will see a significantly different interface. However, YouTube videos will play significantly faster and smooth. Unfortunately, there is no setting for video quality, so it auto-selects (not sure what factors are involved).

Alternatively, you can download SVPtube. This program is meant to be used with MPC-HC. Basically, the program runs in the background and waits until it detects a YouTube link in the clipboard. Then it auto-extracts the video associated with that link and sends it to MPC-HC as a pop-up player. This allows the Mini 1012 to be able to watch full 720p video a lot better than using the flash/HTML5 version of YouTube used in typical web browsers.
- If you try this route, you're best to also download CoreAVC, which is a H.264 decoding program that is extremely efficent, and helps the Intel Atom handle the processing a lot better. Just make sure MPC-HC is set up correctly in the External Filters, making sure CoreAVC is selected.

For some reason SVPTube isn't working correctly, when copying a youtube URL MPC-HC opens but just sits there at "Opening.." and never opens anything, I tried reloading SVPTube / rebooting mini, but the Android kitkat trick works fairly well so far, Thanks for the info.

I use SVPTube with Torch, not Chrome. But it shouldn't matter. I'm not really sure why it wouldn't work.

As for the Android trick, some websites require you to use the 'm.' domain to get it to work (m.facebook.com, m.youtube.com, etc.). Sometimes they will re-direct you, and sometimes they wont.
