Default Windows 8.1 - 06-29-2013, 09:22 PM

In windows 8 my internet explorer is always slow and stops working in desktop mode. I am disappointed with the apps in metro mode and the performance is nowhere near my ipad 2. I set up a dual boot with windows 7 and mostly use windows 7 as the browser works better and all my programs work. I keep checking windows 8 in hopes that the performance and apps will improve but I am still disappointed. I first went the windows website and downloaded windows 8.1 preview but after restarting it looked the same. I then went to the metro store and found a download there and it installed. The first thing I noticed that the dual boot menu is now touch enabled whereas before I had to use a mouse to select windows 7 or 8. I like this! When everything was installed I checked windows 7 and nothing was changed and everything seems to be working as before the change to windows 8.1.
I then booted to 8.1 and internet explorer would not work in desktop or metro. After a search in win 7 internet explorer I found a solution that fixed it (reset internet explorer in control panel). Now I am wondering if this would have fixed the problem I was having with win 8.

Hey 3Dog,

It's hard to say but that may have been all that was needed. I've been using Win8 on my Duo from the original test release and I haven't had any trouble at all. I have not loaded Win8.1 only because I do not want to completely start from scratch, clean install, once the official final rev/release comes out. From what I've read you can't upgrade from the beta/prerelease to the final release without doing a clean install but you can upgrade from Win8 to the final release of Win8.1 and not have to do a clean install.

Windows 8.1 beta seems to run allot slower than 8 on the DUO. I have mine set up as a dual boot with WIN 7 and find I use 7 but want to keep 8 just to see if it will ever be as good as the IPAD, which I purchased after the DUO and use most of the time. Win 8 does nothing for me that Win 7 can't do. The apps are lame and slow. I haven't found one worth spending a dime on, as long as I have an IPAD.

As I have given up on Microsoft I now want a dual boot Mac Air (touch screen) or Pro that will run IOS apps. You can dual boot a Mac and run Windows if you have some good programs that you still use. There are still no signs that it will happen but all my ideas eventually come true. I could even settle for one without a touch screen as long as the touch pad takes figure gestures. I have no need to play chopsticks.

I think our DUOs are just to under powered for anything going forward. For me Win8 did make mine a lot more enjoyable but it is still way to laggy compared to my wife's Surface Pro. With Haswell out I think there are going to be some very competitive and impressive tablets on the way for the holidays. It will be awesome to have 8 to 10 hours of battery life out of an iPad sized Windows 8 tablet. Now with a common core between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 more and more developers are jumping on board. I've read a lot of articles where Mac & iOS and Android developers are excited about the direction Microsoft is going. But I know it is going to take more time and updates to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 for Microsoft to catch up. Apple and Android have a huge jump on the tablet and phone market.

I also have a 2011 Mac Pro laptop with SSD and 8g memory. I loaded the same windows 8 operating system that I have set up on the DUO on the Parallels vm software and boy did it fly. I liked the Mac touchpad with windows 8 and found that I did not miss the touch screen. The 13 inch screen is also nice. I think the DUO will be my last windows laptop. Just waiting for Parallels to run ios so I can use the Ipad apps on a laptop with the Mac trackpad. The win 8 apps do not come close to Ipad apps.

The Duo may not be the fastest convertible these days, but Windows 8.1 RTM performs very well on the unit. I installed 8.1 Enterprise and Microsoft seems to have added a few features that take real advantage of the touchscreen, especially in Office 2013. I can even do some modest graphics editing, and MS Office work is absolutely fine.

Pundits are predicting a drop in Windows tablet prices for the holiday shopping season, so used Duos will likely come down as well if sellers are going to move them out. Lately $200 seems to be the going rate, often with the JBL dock included. I use mine on a daily basis and find it a dandy size for most of my mobile work.

I upgraded to the official 8.1 release and my touch screen isn't working properly. I can swipe down from the top to close an app but none of the other swipes work. Nothing from the right or left and I cannot scroll via the touch screen. I checked for updated drivers but I haven't found anything. Also, there used to be a setting in Control Panel called Pen and Touch. It is no longer present.

If anyone have any ideas please chime in.

Thanks!

Which version did you download? I am running Enterprise and all features are present and working including the Pen and Touch Control Panel app.

I would recommend a clean install if you are seeing these kinds of bugs.

I just did the update through the Store. I figured that a complete reinstall would be my next move.

Thanks for the help!
