Default Mini 10v no longer sold - best replacement? - 09-16-2010, 04:24 PM

First post!

So it looks like the Dell Mini 10v is (was) the right netbook to get for OSX. But checking with Dell, they don't make it anymore.

I guess I could peruse the usual sources for used equipment but I thought I'd ask what is the best replacement for the 10v.

My understanding is that the trickiest components re: compatibility are

video
wireless
audio

Any recommendations? (there are a couple of old threads but I thought I'd ask again).

10V (1011) Dell is the one you want, and there are plenty of new as well as re-furbished and used available. E-bay is a great starting place as well as Wal-mart & Sam's Club. Just do a search and you'll see prices in the 200-350 US dollar range.

Also, re: wireless network card, I see that 10v's came with 2 types:

Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card

The difference is obvious but when it comes to being compatible with OSX, is one better than the other?

Thanks. Sadly I'm in Canada and I can't get at the Dell refurb store nor do the Canadian Walmarts have Dell computers.

Do none of the current netbooks have the right combo of processor or video chip?

If a mini 10 (not 10v) pops up in the local classifieds, am I to understand to avoid those?

Also, I sometimes might see a Nickelodeon 10v. Is there anything to watch out for in those?

Mini 10 is not the choice you want to make. The Nickelodeon 10V will work just fine, it's just really ugly.

I would use some Krylon Fusion paint on it if I had to buy one.

Can you order a 10V from the Walmart website and get it delivered to your local store? They are available that way here, but they no longer have them in the stores here either. They call it Site to Store.

Thanks. I might have to go cross the border to a nearby US Walmart.

If that's your plan just be aware that they're not actually sold in the stores anymore. As mentioned above, you can buy online and have it "ship to store". This way you just pick the closest US Walmart store to you and pick it up after it arrives.

i did a search on the amazon and found what you mentioned about the 10v, but i can't find any info about the wireless lan and bluetooth. does the amazon one come with bluetooth module?

Dell Inspiron Mini 10V Netbook Computer (Intel Atom N280 160GB/1GB)

the Nicklodeon slime version is only N270, which i believe is not as power efficient as N280 Atom.

Looks like a typo, the 10v has a 270 processor. Look lower on the page and the processor is listed as 270. I am no expert on this, maybe someone more knowledgable can shed light on this subject. You can contact the seller for more information of course.
