some odd behavior with the drive in the BIOS...

it says None for Fixed HDD:

yet it is selectable as a boot option as a hard drive:

Windows detected it immediately and started installing no problem.

I noticed that it reports its size as 15,390 mb... that's a full .68gb larger than the 14,684 reported by the STEC "16gb" drive! I can't say for sure, but I'd guess that the STEC has more space reserved for wear leveling and error correction than the MyDigitalSSD drive does.

Is there any real difference between SLC and MLC? I saw the MLC was cheaper.

Is MDD selling STEC drives? I thought they were no brand drives sourced elsewhere.

STEC Drive shipping with the DELL Mini was SLC for the 16GB version only. the 4GB and 8GB were sourced elsewhere

MyDigitalDiscount sells chinese no name drives. The MLC version I have has Toshiba chips on it.
MLC drives are slower and "less reliable" than SLC, but FAR (3x) cheaper.
MDD does not sell STEC drives.
All of the STEC drives shipped in Mini9's are the exact same speed, doesn't matter if it was 4 8 or 16gb. Nobody has reported receiving a Mini9 from Dell that did not have a STEC brand drive in it.
And finally.. It's normal for the MyDigitalDiscount drive to not show up in the bios status screen. No idea why.

No, MDD is selling their own drives, not STEC ones.

No, all of the factory drives for the Mini 9 are MLC flash based.

Please update all of us on your experience with this drive!

I bought the Dell with an 8GB STEC thinking I'd upgrade to using an MDD once I got it, but the posts I've seen so far have me holding off waiting for somebody who got one to post their results. Since the MDD MLC's are slower than the stock STEC ones, I probably don't want to go that direction, since anything that slows the laptop down more won't fly with me.

Everyone is going to want to see benchmark results of course, but I'm more interested in the concrete stuff. Does it change how the laptop FEELS? Does the boot time go down/up? Does it take less/more time to boot Firefox?

No, my 4gb stec and another member of this forum's benchmarks were quite slow compared to the 16gb benches...not sure if it was hardware based or because the benchmark runs slower if you have less free HD space, though.
