Default Hey all, is it really necessary to upgrade to 2GB of RAM? - 01-26-2011, 11:29 PM

I am new to portable computing, and wondering if it's possible for what I do, like one to two browser windows open, if I will really need to upgrade the RAM on my new 1012. It hasn't arrived yet and so I can't judge it myself. I know 2 GB would be better, but my hubby refuses to touch it with a ten foot pole, he's a desktop man. I want this machine to basically websurf, do message boards and email. NO word processing, or anything heavy, probably won't even attempt netflix on it at all, so that's not a concern. If I have to upgrade the RAM at least there are videos on how to do it properly, does it VOID our warranty to do this?

Thanks in advance! Great board you have here, looking forward to posting and being actively involved in threads here.

EDIT:

I got the 1012, NO HD acceleration or HD screen, I got the lower resolution one from the outlet at Dell, but it's got a 6 cell battery and is a nice little machine from what I can tell. I am just looking for validation on this purchase, that it will do what I need it to. I hope it's going to be able to play MP3's and surf basically, but I don't expect it to do BOTH at the same time....

Win 2000, XP will fly on 1 Gig RAM. Win 7 plus a couple of applications will be happy on 2 gig RAM. Warranty is still OK -AFAIK.

you should be able to do both at the same time. However, if surfing the web including youtube or streaming, it might be a bit heavy to do both.

I have a 1012 with HD accelerator and HD screen but I only have 1G of RAM. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I use it to do remote desktop to my office PC; and I do surf the web, check email and simple stuff. I find out it is good for me to do something on-to-go; and it is small enough to carry around.

I am glad to hear it can do both on the 1GB of RAM I will have, I am just uber paranoid about doing the upgrade on RAM myself. Wish hubby would do it, but that's the way it goes. I can totally understand his reasons for not wanting to touch it inside. I kinda feel the same way. Can you watch videos on it without the HD accelerator? Like music videos? On the HDD? That is something I hope it can do-would only have that loaded for on the go viewing and not surf while watching videos. My machine is due here Monday! I am SO excited!

1GB should be adequate for someone with modest expectations.

If you eventually decide to upgrade the RAM in your 1012, it shouldn't be too hard for someone who has upgraded desktops. Hell, it might even be easier. Many desktops have the RAM buried under half-a-dozen components and cables, the 1012 just has the keyboard and an access panel in the way. You do need to be careful with the keyboard connector, it's not robust.

As for your other questions...

Even without the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder card, you should be able to watch DVD resolution (480p) video files in any format, even ones using challenging h.264/AVC video. You should be able to play files stored on the hard drive or on another computer.

Streaming video on websites won't perform quite as well. Adobe Flash is the browser plugin typically used for web video, and it's not high performance. But you should be able to watch low-quality web videos.

To get best quality, I usually download Flash videos and play them in a separate player, but that's not always possible.

As for music playback, I play music (over wireless) while web browsing all the time on netbooks.

Also, look into Ad/Flash/Java/JavaScript blockers for your web browser of choice. The Atom CPU in the 1012 is weak, so blocking heavy content until explicitly allowed helps ease the load. I use Firefox with the NoScript and AdblockPlus addons.

You also can consider using "mobile" versions of some webpages. "Mobile" webpages have fewer features than full webpages, but they're simple enough to view on cellphones, which means a netbook renders them without effort.

I hope you enjoy your netbook.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply reflex! That makes me feel a LOT better. Thanks again for taking time to reply to my questions. I hope it gets here tomorrow, (they updated the ETA so crossing fingers) I got my case for it today and it's so cute, I really am psyched!

What kind does it take? From searching it said DDR2 200 pin 800 MHZ so I am hoping this will work:

I don't mind it on one so far but two might be better. Plus that's really cheap for RAM.

That's a lot of details! I wish I knew what half of it all meant-LOL! Thanks for your reply tikblang, glad it worked out for you, I have hope that I can accomplish this feat myself in the next few months.

Its the output from cpuz, I just copy and paste the memory part. It is the best upgrade I made on my 1012. Totally worth your money

It's not difficult to swap-out the memory. Total of four screws. You will just need a small phillips screw driver.

3 screws from the bottom base and one for the memory cover. I use my chin to hold the keyboard vertically while working on the memory so you may ask somebody to hold it for you while you are replacing the memory.

FYI- because of the 20% coupon I am getting a second 1012 as a backup. You cannot beat the price of US$231.
with free shipping.
