I have also performed this task running GParted from a linux live USB. If as you say your external drive is bootable, this should also work. My current distro of choice for this is Parted Magic. (in Parted Magic GParted is shown as 'Partition Editor.' If you still have your Mac OS X install USB, you may want to check out this thread: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/gene...-usb-hack.html There you'll find info on how to run NBI...351 off your USB, and that may repair your SL install.
