I just bought a GB memory upgrade for my Dell Mini 1010. I had been going around for a while looking for this memory upgrade, first Dell said no, then yes, then no again just the other day. The part that I bought from them did not work at all, the Mini would not even boot. I am guessing some do and some don't, mine doesn't. Dell is allowing my board to be returned with a full refund, but it sure has been frustrating to own a computer than cannot not be upgraded even one baby step. The memory is the only complaint I have about the computer.

ALL the 1010's are upgradeable, providing you get the correct part number

Part #: R031P
- Intel Atom Z530 (1.60GHz/533MHz FSB/512K Cache), 2GB DDR2 RAM

the daughter board listed above will work in EVERY 1010, the board contains the z530 processor also that is why it tends to be a little pricey

Dell Mini 10 (Obsidian Black 1010), 2gb RAM, 1.66ghz 533mhz FSB (Z530) processor, A10 BIOS, 1 Terabyte (1000 GB) WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive (5400rpm), Intel GMA 500 Integrated Graphics, TV Tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR, 1.3mp Camera, 1366x768 HD Screen, Wireless 1510 b/g/n mini card, 6 cell (56WHr) Battery, 4gb SDHC, 64gb Flashdrive, Targus Netbook Chillpad, Targus Sport Case, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (500gb)/Windows 8.1 (500gb) (Dual Boot)

good evening, everyone..i'm not even sure if anyone's even dealing with the mini1010..i DO have a few questions though..i recently got a hold of an R031P CPU/RAM combo..(this is a far superior daughterboard in comparison to the P787N)..the trouble that I had was this: when I installed it..1) the heatsink way off on the top screwing parts of the board..so I left it off..when I ran Win7..it saw the new CPU & the RAM..BUT!!!?? out of nowhere..it slowed down so fast..& stayed slow..i mean at a "snail's pace"..ok..i ran a MEMtest on it..1st..MEMTest86..it went to 4 levels & the computer shut down..i waited a sec..(15 minutes)..then 2nd..I used Windows Memory Diagnostic..after the 2nd part of its test..the PC shuts down..i went ahead & reinstalled the P787N (the original one) & tested it as well..(both tests) & it passes every test with flying colors..but it was still to slow to play Youtube videos..(or ANY videos for that matter)..so I used "Cole's 2K Video Pack"..now videos play flawlessly..(even DVD/BluRay/HD DVD with the help of Total Media 3)..my questions are 1) could the CPU of the R031P have overheated..2) does it matter whether I use a Z520 CPU, a z530, or a z540..(yes they have them)..(laughing)..3) do I need to adjust the heatsink for these 2GB cards..(do I need the heatsink at all)..& 4) does it matter if the CPU is 1.33GHZ or 1.66GHZ or 1.87GHZ..(the 1.87 only has 1GB of RAM)..it seems the 1GB's are perfect squares & the 2GB's have a wing on the side..anyhows..I really could use some help here..hit me back when you get time..thank you all in advance..Peace..& God bless you & yours..

YES!!!!!!. you need the Thermal Pad, it is VERY important, remember these Minis do not have fans to cool them, but DO NOT use any thermal paste on them.....as far as the procesors go there are small increases as you go from the z520 to z530 to the z540 I believe its 1.3ghz to 1.6ghz to 1.8ghz respectively... the faster the CPU the more heat generated..it sounds like you were definitely having a heat issue, PUT BACK THE THERMAL PAD and remember NO THERMAL PASTE, when I upgraded my 1010 the only issue was that 1 of the screws didnt line up perfectly to I just made sure the other 3 were very tight and simply left off the 4th screw, I have had mine for like 4yrs now and NEVER had ANY problems with heat or anything else for that matter.....you might wanna get a cooling pad for underneath the 1010, it plugs into one of the USB ports and does help a lot......mine is a Targus with dual fans in it...something for you to consider maybe......

PS. I paid like $30 for mine @ Bestbuy years ago

PSS. Welcome to the forum......

BTW: Ever since I got my iPad I hardly ever use my Netbook anymore or my big HP laptop for that matter either....that iPad is sooooo fu*king cool (lol)

Question 10-28-2013, 11:00 AM

I dont see the point of the upgrade, you started with 1gb and 'upgraded'? to 1gb, and the 1.33ghz is the z520 processor, what exactly did you UPGRADE?.....mine came with the z530 (1.66ghz) processor w/1gb, I upgraded to the z530 (1.66ghz) processor which is the same as the original but my upgrade went from 1gb to 2gb of RAM.....yours doesnt sound like it did anything????????????????

(laughing)..nah..i was just parting some knowledge..i actually have both..so i had a chance to work with 3 of them..1st the 1.33ghz 1gb ram (p787n)..then the 1.66ghz 1gb ram (k029p)..& i'm currently working with the 1.66ghz 2gb ram (r031p)..remember..that was the one that was giving me trouble..BUT!!?? your suggestion fixed it..i've modified the heatsink & the card itself & now i'm good money..LOL..so no..i didn't "downgrade" anything..i bought one thing before knowing about the other..PLUS: it only costed me like 60 for the 2GB..& like 10-20 for the 1GB 1.66GHZ..so no harm..LOL..& NO DOWNGRADE!! (laughing)..but i'm actually looking for that 1.86GHZ 2GB one..(i've seen the 1.86 1GB for $45..i might get it..&?? keep in mind..RAM is for how many functions can be performed at one time..& the CPU is for the speed of those functions..(or a particular function)..&?? if it's not TOO expensive..it's worth buying something to see how it works..(i'm sure someone HAD to have taken a bath in order to learn how to modify the heatsink so it would fit the 2GB RAM/CPU's)..LOL..again, Double R..i thank you so much..Peace..& God bless..

personally I would rather stick with the 2gb rather than go with the 1gb and a faster processor, I prefer the RAM as opposed to the speed, the speed on mine is pretty good I dont think that the extra .2 ghz would be much of a difference, now if you were taking about a 2 ghz increase then that makes sense, I would rather have the extra 1 gb of RAM, I am also pretty big on disk space, thats why I put a terabyte in mine, got the drive for about $109, got about 600gb for Win 7 and about 400gb for Win 8, I could just about damn near run Motor Vehicles off this thing (lol)

(laughing)..i hear that..you know what?? they actually have 2GHZ processors for these..LOL..(ATOM Z560's)..but i don't think you can run those w/o a fan..i'm going to put win7 HP 64 in it..& i'll see what's good with it..i can't find Win 7 Starter on a standard disk..so i'm going high tech..(laughing)..i wish they'd let you make recovery discs for these..i'm going to use a WD 250GB HDD..i may sell it..but for now..i'll just have fun with it..(i bought it for 40..so i can't complain)..LOL..i have a Sony Vaio Mini too..but the MOBO is dead..so i'm getting another one for 60..i'll put in 2GB of RAM & i have a HDD with everything on it from the old mini..i'm DEFINITELY going to sell that one..i again want to thank you for your wisdom & kindness..&?? if you find the M036P (the Z540 w/1.86GHZ & 2GB RAM)..let me know..Peace..& God bless..
