Default Dell Wireless AT&T built-in... unlocked? - 04-10-2009, 04:39 PM

This is probably a very elementary question and I would deserve to be directed to the search box, but...

I was looking at the outlet store. If I order a Dell Mini 9 with the Dell Wireless AT&T built-in cellular mobile broadband (HSPA 7.2), will I be able to use it Europe with other service providers?

Not sure if its unlocked since I dont have unit with that option but you can easily just get a USB adapter (for ex. USB720 for verizon) for their broadband services and take out pci modem inside they run around 25-35 bucks used.

hmm . . .

I spoke to the dell sales (home and office)

they said that the sim slot is not accessible and that you cant put a sim in the mini from your current dataplan enabled cell phone . ( maybe the sales guys are dumb)

But i would really love to find out if the hspa 7.2 aircard is unlocked or is unlockable . . that would mean even if att blocks the imei for my machine (air card), i can always switch carriers . . .

Your salesperson was uh...misinformed? (Code for lying through his/her teeth or just not knowing jack ***t.)

The sim slot is totally accessible after you remove the battery.

You should have no problem whatsoever.

And in any event, you can easily replace the 3G modem itself with a tiny screwdriver, and use whatever carrier
you want.

Let us know what you do?

I can confirm it is fully unlocked, at least on mine... I am using my dell mini 9 in Paraguay with cell provider TIGO, and get full HSDPA support.

regards

5530 card is unlocked on US supplied mini9's. I origonally submitted unlock code request to AT&T per older posts, and they sent back reply card is not locked. I use T-Mobile prepaid sim in Texas, and it works fine once you configure connection correctly. The default connections in the Dell Wireless Manager program are set for datacard accounts, so if you wish to use phone type sim account with data, you have to enter correct APN (i.e. wap.voicestream.com for T-Mobile). I've also successfully set up AT&T prepaid GoPhone type account on the sim that came with the Mini when purchased from Dell. If you need info on how to do this, PM me. AT&T prepaid however is expensive at 0.01 Kb.

For those who wish to try test w/o getting prepaid contract type account, the least expensive way is to buy a sim card from T-Mobile web site for $6.99. Then go on ebay and purchase 1 month unlimited T-Mobile activation for apporx. $5. The card will then give you unlimited data, SMS, email access via T-Mobile for approx. 30 days before you have to either sign up for account, or trash card and buy another.

Hope this helps anyone like me who just wanted to test the data card in my Mini w/o having to sign up for contract service.

AT&T has the advantage that it is 3G. t mobile doesnt have 3G in like anywhere and where they do it runs at 1700MHz, at&t uses 850/1900 MHz for 3G. so the internet will be hell a lot faster on AT&T if your in a 3G area.

Only if you are using isp.cingular as a APN. wap.cingular is not a laptop APN it is filtered and runs slow as hell on a computer since the traffic is throttled, proxied, and behind a firewall.

That's just what the Dell "Mobile Broadband Specialist" told me when I bought my first Mini 9. I had my doubts about their advice but never had a chance to verify because I sold that Mini before I opened it.

Probably a dubm question. Do I need a sidekick phone for activation?
