Question Upgrade to Windows 7 Pro a good idea?.. - 07-01-2012, 02:41 AM

Hi Guys,,

I've had my mini9 for about a week now, i purchased the netbook second-hand from ebay and would love to get some advice about suitable OS installs.

The netbook shipped with WinXp Home Sp3 and i did an image backup of the HDD and a bootUSB just in case i had to reinstall the system. I purchased a 32GB SSD to replace the original Dell STEC 16GB SSD, installed it and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro (non-cut down) totally approx. 9GB install. I read a few tutorials which has the Win7 install down to about 6GB which is where i would like to be eventually. I then installed the Dell drivers from the support website in correct order How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order | Dell= as i didn't get a drivers disk when i purchased the mini9 and set about using wireless etc.

I can update my OS fine, applications install, LAN works 100% but i have no wireless, no bluetooth, no camera although the driver for that did say it installed correctly so it may be a case of installing software and whenever i check the battery the meter software crashes.

What am i doing wrong? The Xp setup that was already installed worked fine, i didnt actually have to upgrade it except that i am used to Win7 and wanted to have a crack at getting it working....My function keys and wireless don't work. The battery meter and camera i can deal with but there's no point having an awesome portable laptop, if you cant connect wirelessly...Is it a case of drivers that arent compatible with win7??

EDIT: okay i justed tested my function keys and they all work excpet Fn+2 and Fn+3 so the wireless network/bluetooth & battery keys...

Any help for a new Mini9 owner is much appreciated

I'm posting from Forum Runner which won't give me links, but look in the "Windows 7 Guides" section of this forum for a post with links to drivers for Windows 7 on the Mini 9. Win7 runs fine on the Mini 9 with everything functional, once you get the drivers.

Thanks for the advice! I was able to get the Bluetooth/Wireless toggle key working using the mini9 drivers but the battery meter was still crashing and that was fixed with a mini10 driver as a member on the forum (i forget who it was) suggested that since the mini9 was an XP machine that the Vista drivers from the mini10 may be more compatible with Windows 7. It runs really well now. The camera is working also, i just had no dedicated software to access it and fixed that by installing Skype.

I would definately recommend any mini owner to install win7, it runs quite smoothly with enough RAM installed
