Default Swap colors.... - 02-14-2009, 12:14 AM

Swap colors? Okay so this is the deal, I just got my wife her mini 9, but now I like it so much I want one. She likes the red one(I know I know!) The one I found that is red has better hardware in it, which she doesn't need(says me!). Is there an easy way to just change the shell between the two?

Easy? Well, it can be done but requires rather complete disassembly. Official instructions are here - pictures from users are here.

Maybe a stupid question but what better hardware is there between the 2?

Wouldn't it just be easier to just swap these components and SSD rather than full disassembly?

The only red part is the upper lid. You do NOT need to remove all of the pieces to do this. Pop off top, disconnect wires. Repeat.

Still missing the point of this since all Mini's share the same hardware! Unless the red one has a WWAN in use or something?

If the webcam is one of the pieces you want to swap, then you'll be tearing it down to the lid anyways. If it's the BT module, you'll only go down to pulling off the palmrest. If it's just memory and the SSD, pop off the bottom cover and swap the parts.

I ordered a replacement lid for one of my Minis and did the change in about 45 minutes. If you've ever taken a laptop apart before, it's really a pretty simple procedure. But make sure you have a printout of the disassembly guide (or another machine with the page pulled up) nearby when doing it. And take your time with the screws. They use loctite on them, so it can take a few tries to get some of them loose. A jeweler's screwdriver and some patience is all you need. Good luck!

It's not as easy as pop the top off. There are screws that hold the LCD into place. To get to these you have to remove the front bezel. To do this properly, you have to detach the whole LCD section from the base. Overall, switching colors is easy. I've done it. 30-45 minute job.

I think I am just going to swap the webcam, which appears it might be a lot of work.... Turns out I was able to get a mini the same color, so maybe just swap the lids of the two?
