Thumbs up GarageBand 08/09 Size: Dirty Fix - 01-04-2010, 12:55 AM

Hey All.

There is a free and open source app called Afloat (link after my blabbering) that will allow you to manage your open windows by "grabbing" the individual window anywhere (among other neat features) just like Linux distros allow you to do.

i.e., you will be able to grab by pressing Command (alt..) and Control and drag the window to your desired area. With Afloat, you will be able to drag GarageBand up to view the play/pause/record buttons or down to view the tracks much more easily without the use of excessive key commands and without shelling out money for some other app.

This will work with most apps written in Cocoa... so you can do the same with iChat windows, Safari, etc... but not Firefox or Thunderbird, etc...

Hope this fix works for some of you!

Just my .2... I installed it on my MacBook and it caused HUGE bootup problems for me after a while. I had to reinstall the OS everytime I turned the computer on. When I identified Afloat as the problem, I had a MAJORLY difficult time uninstalling it. I'd bet theres still parts on my machine....

Just sayin, proceed with caution...

Frasierman,

That is indeed strange...
I researched and found a few people with similar problems, but they had mistakenly installed the Leopard version on SL.

I've experienced no problems whatsoever over the last few months on the two 10Vs or my Macbook Pro on which I've installed it.

There is an uninstaller located in the installer package, at least in Version 2.2 for SL.

If that fails, a second way is:

"Afloat is a SIMBL plugin, so if you need to “uninstall” it, just go over to /Users/(your username)/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins and remove Afloat.bundle"

Good luck!

Nope, didn't work.

I downloaded the correct version (SL)

Installed it (said it was successful)

couldn't find it anywhere on my system or use it with the correct key combination

so i removed it with appzapper

Sorry.

Hackint0sh

To use it, you can view the key commands under the "Window' tab of the task bar. In said Cocoa apps, it gives options to Keep Afloat, Transparency, Turn Overlays Back To Normal, and Adjust Effects.

Here is a decent explanation:

To do the dragging, you hold Control and Command (which would be your Alt button) and click (not tap since the Mini's trackpad is subpar) the Cocoa app's window anywhere inside, and drag.

It works.

Default Thanks - 01-04-2010, 09:16 PM

Thanks for the help but I will no longer need this method as i have ordered a VGA cable to hook up to my LG 22" TV so garageband should be fine with that?

i've an external monitor already-but that is irrelevant to getting garageband to work on mini-sorry to hear of one, and only one detractor amongst many promoters, so it would seem consensus is this is good fix.
