Angry GPS makes Streak reboot - 02-26-2011, 06:24 PM

Fellow Streak owners. I hope you don't have my rotten luck. My GPS crash problem happened when it had 1.6. I was driving using GPS navigation. Then suddenly the Streak flashed and rebooted. I thought it was a 1.6 problem.

Yesterday I upgraded to 2.2. I did factory reset several times. Unfortunately the problem persists. Whenever I open any map app with GPS on, GPS would work for a second then DELL Streak flashes and reboots.

This morning I hooked up USB debug. The error message I got was:
smsm_irq_handler: modem crash: 'mod cc_slicer.c 01519
ARM9 has crashed

Can anyone help me? I guess it is a hardware issue.

Is it.just with the map navigation app?

Have you tried the numerous GPS utils on the market?

Yes I did. I tried several. They all crash when the satellites are used. It seems the ARM crash happens after the satellites are located.
If I only use compass, the crash does not happen.

It may help if you purge the Dalvik cache (I don't know how, sorry). This stores pre-compiled system code - if the code is corrupt, it is possible that this may be causing crashes. Purging the cache would force it to freshly recompile the code.

No guarantees - this is just a long-shot.

Compass doesn't necessarily use the GPS receiver, I can get mine to work without GPS. (It's actually more accurate that way)

To me it sounds like a hardware fault, most likely the GPS reciever or it's antenna shorting on something. The GPS receiver is only powered once enabled or an app tries to use it. You say this suddenly happened for the first time while driving, had it worked ok before? A sudden jolt maybe enough to unseat the antenna or GPS module.

See what happens after you've tried Wyndstryke's idea, here's how:

Hello thanks for all the replies. I guess it was the Dalvic cache problem. Since I still have not figured out how to root the Streak after I installed official 2.2, I couldn't do the super user tricks.
I removed the battery and left it aside for long enough. Today I turned it back on and GPS is working again. I guess the dumb way worked?
