Default Ubuntu 8.10 Update to Ubuntu 9.04 Failed - 05-06-2009, 09:55 AM

Hi, could someone help me out.

I tried updating my Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04, but while I was updating it was interrupted, or lost connection of internet, then I accidentally installed the packages. Now I can't boot to the OS.

A normal boot would display after the splash screen:

Boot from (hd0, 0) ext2 (SERIES OF NUMBERS)
Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay] (did the system wait too long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; 1s /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/(SERIES OF NUMBERS) does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

You're booting partway off the internal drive. So, we know it's not toast.

But you're just getting the first, limited part of the boot. And it looks like you got the 9.04/Jaunty version of the early boot running, judging by the BusyBox version number. But the full Jaunty system isn't booting.

Your system's probably fixable, but it might be an arduous process. I don't know how badly the system files are messed up. It might be just one file to fix, it might be many.

I'd probably just download a 9.04 Live CD and put in on a flash drive (or use the Netbook Remix's Live USB image), boot it up and save any files off the internal drive that you need. Then completely reformat the drive, a perform a fresh install. Unless you have alot of files to save, I think this'll be the easiest solution.

Have you tried booting into recovery mode from your grub menu?
Are there any older kernels in the grub menu you can try booting into?

I did try a fresh install several times, but it wouldn't read my LiveUSB.

For Realtek RTL8101E/9102E PCI-E Ethernet Conroller v1.08 (080408)
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Operating System not found

However, I am going to try it again.
As for booting to a recovery mode, yes I can do that. There are two kernels, and two recovery modes.

Thanks for your help.
