Default YouTube vs. Hulu? - 09-23-2009, 05:07 AM

Can someone please explain why almost all Flash videos work perfectly fine on the mini9 but Hulu is complete garbage? Do they use higher quality encodings?

I watch video podcasts for my class via Flash daily -- they play just fine. I can play all SD content from YouTube without trouble. I can stream TED talks, The Daily Show, etc. but for whatever reason Hulu just sucks.

Anyone?

I can't access Hulu cos I'm from the UK but in my experience of flash video on the mini it generally boils down to how the content was encoded. High def video streams converted from h.264 videos can be choppy even on youtube, but lower quality content plays fine.

I'm guessing Hulu streams high quality files that are just too complex for the mini to cope with. It's the combination of HD footage and the flash video container that does it. I can play HD footage just fine using VLC player but if I attempt the same thing using flash as a container my mini often chokes.

I guess Flash isn't as well optimised as a dedicated video playing app.

Yes... Flash = crap and it is extremely inefficient. If Adobe would update it and make it optimized then everyone would be happy

Silverlight looks better with every release. I feel like Microsoft has committed itself to making a product that is streamlined and works well with Macs. Unless something even better comes along, I'm sure it will edge out Adobe and their underperforming, proprietary software.

I really wish Hulu would just give us the option to choose which player we would like to use. That or just ditch Adobe altogether. But Silverlight has been around for a fair amount of time and nothing has happened yet -- I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Here's what I don't understand - why did Hulu work just fine on my Mini9 under 10.5.7 and then crap out under 10.5.8? And I've yet to hear if 10.6.1 has better hulu performance.

Finally, is Hulu on the 10v better? if so, maybe it's worth it to switch...

I'd be interested to know this as well... my ONLY complaint about the mini9 is it's inability to work with Hulu. I know some people claim to have Hulu working fine, but I've tried again and again and no matter what I do nothing seems to change. Oh well, maybe in a year there will be upgrade mini's that support OSX with a bit faster processors?

Hulu uses H.264 for streaming their high quality files. H.264 is an extremely efficient codec, but requires more horsepower to decode and display.

Older Flash codecs such as VP6 are less efficient in file size and quality, but easier to decode. Most Flash files that you will encounter on the intertoobs are of the older VP6 codec (such as standard quality Youtube files.)

Also, the Intel 945GSE graphic chipset in the 10V doesn't support H.264 hardware acceleration (but it does support the older MPEG2 standard, but it's useless for Flash.) I assume the Mini 9 uses a similar family chipset.

You can improve the playback of Hulu videos by right-clicking on the video window and setting a lower Quality level in the Flash contextual menu. Try dropping it down to Medium or Low quality and see if that helps with playback.

Another easy way to improve playback, drop to 16bit video vs 32 bit. Lets me watch on my external monitor as well.

How do you change this?
