Default Questions about installing Windows 8.1 - 01-07-2014, 11:23 PM

I am wondering about installing Windows 8.1 on my mini. I bought my mini 1012 directly from Dell and have been lurking at this site for awhile. I have found some great information and it's now time to try to figure out what I want to do with this.

I've been trying to decide if I want to upgrade memory as it still has the 1GB and 32 bit system. It's running slow and needs some help. I just got the Venue Pro 8 and I can't believe how slow system really is.

My ultimate goal is to run the same programs so I can go back and forth between the mini and the tablet? Do you think it is possible?

Thanks for all the info!

Possible? Yes. Will it be faster than the Venue Pro? Very unlikely. I am surprised to hear you complain about the Venue Pro as I've heard many good things about its performance for a tablet. It is using Intel's latest "Bay Trail" Atom CPU, which is far faster than the Atom found in your 1012. If you're comparing it to a regular notebook, though, I could understand the disappointment.

Nevertheless, I have Windows 8.1 on my Mini 9 (slower than your 1012), and it has what I consider acceptable performance - certainly no worse than XP was.

No, I am not complaining about the Venue Pro tablet! I love how much faster it runs compared to my mini, and that's why I was wondering if Windows 8 would improve the speed.

And the other thought about speed is increasing the memory. Is it worth doing?

The mini and the tablet are all I use now since my Inspiron 531 PC lost the hard drive last year. I can only imagine how slow it would be compared to the tablet!

My only complaint about the Venue is the active stylus, but fatter trying to do a search for something compatible, I found that almost all the new tablets with active stylus' are having problems of some sort, so that has softened my opinion of the defective stylus. However, I do feel that Dell needs to make things right with everyone who bought the active stylus with the tablet.

Maxing out the RAM on the 1012 will help, but it's hard to say how much. If you could replace the hard disk with an SSD, you will see a dramatic improvement, but that is an expensive upgrade. I do think Win8 is faster than XP, but it may not be noticeable.

Installing 2GB of RAM in the 1012 make a huge difference in performance. Luckily with the 1012 you don't have to take apart the whole machine. Just remove the keyboard and the RAM cover is accessable.
