Default Linux and AT&T WWAN? - 12-03-2011, 05:19 AM

I've had my Dell Mini 1012 for a little more than a year now. It's been adequate so far, but I would REALLY like to install Linux on it. I bought it through AT&T solely because it has Broadband capabilities through my cell phone carrier. I am in the middle of my 2 year contract, so I don't want to loose this functionality.

I would really like to install Linux (probably Fedora 15 or 16) because the Windows 7 is just holding me back.

What information do I need to save to get the WWAN/Broadband working under Linux? I have used it on numerous occasions under Windows, so I know everything currently works. Which version of Fedora installs and runs more smoothly? I currently only have 1GB of ram, so things can get tight with a large window manager. I prefer Fedora over Ubuntu.

Thanks,
Chuck

Reflex, thank you so much for your post. It was very insightful. ;-)

Well, I did find out what information I need. I just need to know which country I have service in, who my carrier is and what my plan is so it can determine my APN. For my combination, AT&T uses isp.cingular. After that, the connection works well.

I have so far tried Fedora 15 and 16. Fedora 16 seemed a little unstable, but I am beginning to wonder if that was due to an overheating problem I have discovered while running Linux.
