Default Dell 11z with Core i3 cpu - 10-20-2010, 02:08 PM

Sprint (in the US) seem to be announcing a Dell 11z with Core i3-330m in this Engadget article:

Sprint invites Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and Inspiron 11z into the dual-mode 3G / WiMAX league -- Engadget

I wonder if that's why they dropped the K325 (dual core) option from the Inspiron M101z? It's no longer even listed in the tech specs on Dell's website.

Mini 9 (910): Cherry Red, N270, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB STEC SSD, XP Home
Mini 10v (1011): Passion Purple, N270, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, XP Home
Inspiron 11z (1110): Passion Purple, SU4100, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Win7
Alienware M11x R1: Cosmic Black, SU7300, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, Win7
Latitude 2110: Blue Ribbon, N470, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Touchscreen, Win7
Zino HD (400): True Blue, Athlon X2 3250e, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Win7
Plus a few others not discussed here...

I wonder if we can get our hands on the i3 processor and swap it into our 11z's?

Not possible. Your 11z won't support newer gen CPUs.

I don't see why not. I highly doubt Dell has changed anything else in a laptop that they no longer sell. The processor and ram are on a daughter board that plugs into the motherboard, maybe it could be swapped right in. That being said, the laptop at the Sprint website does not look like an 11z, it looks like an M101z. Maybe they've modified that to take an i3?

I also wondered about the daughter-board situation.

Worst comes to worst it might be possible to swap out the whole MOBO from that unit, assuming they didn't make any other big changes to the hardware.

Chris...

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I've been looking from a new Laptop to replace my XPS1210 whose 3rd mother board is starting to fail. I want a 13inch Dell with HDMI, but its slim pickings if you want one of those and live in the US. The 101z caught my have eye, so I have been doing my research the past few days. It seems to me 11z Sprint is getting is actually based on the m101z chasis. If you take a look at Sprint's website, Sprint: First and Only Wireless 4G from a National Carrier the picture looks just like the 101z. From my research Dell seems to be moving to a naming convention that denotes intel processors as two numbers followed by a letter and AMD processors as 3 numbers followed by a letter, hence the intel version of the 101z will be the new 11z. Since Sprint is getting the 11z on Nov 14, do you think the i3 model will also be available to order from Dell on that day too? I don't think Dell would make the new processor a Sprint exclusive, but ya never know...

I have this Dell 11z with the Core i3 processor; I love it. Review to come... I've already posted on the CNET pages regarding this new Dell model 1121 (Sprint). Go there to see it or wait for me to paste what I've said here.
