Default 1121 stock utility/recovery partitions? - 07-06-2012, 03:14 AM

Ok, so I received my 1121 (iM101z-3980BK) today from newegg. After making an image of the HDD I booted Ubuntu desktop 12.04 off USB, shrunk down the main (OS) partition some and installed Ubuntu behind it. I actually have yet to boot the Win7 partition. I did notice the two smaller, additional partitions in front of the OS. I'm guessing one of them holds the restore image as there is no reasonable media included, but how does one access these? From the Ubuntu install I've already overwritten the MBR and I now go to a menu where I can access the Ubuntu OS, the memory test Ubuntu installed, and the Win7 OS. Curious as to what's actually on the partitions and how they get used.

Yeah, knowing the first page of this sub forum has threads that were last active over 7 months ago gives me an indication that there isn't much traffic in this branch. But it is specific for the product line, and this forum has already turned up good information when I was searching for info on adding Bluetooth. Not in any rush for answers on these Dell partitions, more a curiosity thing. I figure it is probably a similar setup across their products anyway.

the smaller partition (100MB) is a dos diagnostic. i think if you hit F12 you can access it. the 2nd partition (12-13GB) is the recovery partition. i believe it's the active one with the boot manager. the rest is the OS/win7 partition.

if you run BCDEDIT.exe from \osrecovery-partition\boot\

it should show you a breakdown. just don't make changes.

i wiped out my drive, altho i have an image of the original partition schemes.

i'm running linux mint 12 on my 1121. i have winXP on a vmware vmplayer (for running netflix or itunes or some windows app). i have linux mint 12 also on a dell mini 9. was a windows user forever, but just prefer linux more now.
