Default Unable to get 1366x768 resolution on my Dell Mini 1012 - Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) - 05-01-2011, 04:10 PM

Hi,

I have a Dell Mini 1012 running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). I've manually installed my wireless, and otherwise everything seems to work fine. However, my resolution is set at 1024x600, and I don't have the option under "system > preferences > monitors" to move up to 1366x768.

The monitor is designed to run at 1366x768 (HD) and my graphic chip is the Intel GMA 3150, so there should be no reason I can't get this resolution (see the system specs at http ://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1012/en/cs/cs_en.pdf).

From what I've read, there should be no problem with the Intel GMA 3150 driver. And from what I can see, I think the driver is fine, because I seem to have Compiz working (e.g. my Terminal window background is semi-transparent).

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Cheers, Jim

its either you have the wrong driver or a conflict with other software which is setting it incorrectly that is assuming that you really do have the HD screen..the HD screen is OPTIONAL NOT a standard screen (you pay extra $ for it)

Are you sure your Mini has the optional 1366x768 screen? Run "xrandr" in a terminal. The resolution with a "+" next to it should be the screen's native res.

Hmm,

I bought it March 2011, and it was a factory refurbished model. I was led to believe that it had a HD screen, but now I'm not so sure.

Running xrandr I get:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096
LVDS1 connected 1024x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 222mm x 125mm
   1024x600 60.0*+
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Cheers, Jim

You should be able to lookup the specs as shipped at dell.com with your service tag.

Also, on the 1012, I think the Broadcom Crystal HD decoder was frequently (always?) paired with the HD screen. Run "lspci" in a terminal to list PCI devices, I think the card shows up as "Multimedia controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 1615".
