Unhappy 1018 Only Boots To XP Now - 10-04-2014, 11:40 PM

I'm not computer illiterate. I know just enough to do some damage. Which...apparently...I've done.

I wanted to dual boot XP along with 7, so I partitioned the HD for 15G. When I tried booting from my XP disk using an external usb DVD drive, it came up not recognizing any mass storage device. (That's funny, I'm sure there's a HD in there...lol) Anyway, research suggested changing the SATA Operation in Setup to ATA and NOT AHCI. (I don't know what either of these mean...but okay.)

So, doing that, and booting from the DVD, voila! There are my partitions...cool.

So, I proceed to load XP without issue, and it boots fine in XP. But...I don't get the option of choosing my OS at start-up. So I thought maybe I needed to change the SATA back to ATA. But, when doing that, I get a bluescreen blip and the old, "Windows wasn't able to reboot." Ah-oh.

Now, when I start-up via F8, the only OS showing is XP, no 7. I know it's there, because going into Windows Explore, I see my C: partition plain as day with all my Windows 7 activity from the last couple of years. Btw, I loaded XP on what the machine is calling the D: even though when I partitioned it, I designated it as "X" for XP. Clever, huh? 'Spose it would be if it worked.

So, have I screwed myself to the point of having to start over and reload 7? Or is there something I can tweak to be able to dual boot this little gem and carry on with only a little pride removed from posterior?

Thanks for any help.

Kevin
