Re: Problems with Brightness?

Here's one way to adjust via a terminal:
echo num | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

where "num" is a number between 1 and 15 (1 being lowest brightness, 15 highest)

Re: Running hot

Have you checked the task manager?
Mine only gets hot when the CPU is hard at work.

Is yours always hot?

Re: MINI A04 BIOS coming soon...

Why not check CPU usage while you're using Flash or Silverlight?

Flash sucks (up a lot of CPU) and I'd imagine Silverlight does too.

Re: Choppy Video

Most SSDs use flash memory.
The 4GB max file size is a limitation of whatever filesystem you're using.

Re: Possible experimental BIOS to address Video Memory

Not if you can't boot to flash the original BIOS, unless there's some failsafe mechanism, or you can pull out and reprogram or replace the actual chip, which I think is unfortunately soldered rather...

Re: 4GB SSD: Things I can delete in ubuntu.

I can't remember what all I removed, but I had my install down to 1.7GB when I finally got tired of going through stuff :)

Started with the packages using the most space, and worked my way down.

Re: So why did you pick a mini over the competition

No moving parts, and the option to purchase without a camera or bluetooth.

Have you tried removing the key, and putting it back? or reseating the keyboard cable?

Re: 2Gb ram

It is storage space, but it's temporary, and extremely fast compared to other types of storage.

Temporary as it loses it's contents if power is lost, and since you don't typically have a whole lot...

Re: 2Gb ram

Virtual Memory *can* use your hard drive (if you have a swap/paging file or partition available), but it doesn't have to.
There's a decent article on wikipedia:...

Re: SDHC problem

Are you saying moving from the SSD to the SD seems faster than going straight to the SD card?
I'd guess most of the data is in RAM and hasn't actually sync'd to the SD card by the time it appears...

Re: Fixing SSH

I had heard about this problem, but never experienced it.

There's a patch out for the driver now so it's not necessary to run iwpriv to fix.

Re: Flash Video Problems?

Flash stinks in general, but at least youtube works fine for me with Flash 9 or 10 in Ubuntu.

What specific applets are extremely slow for you?

Re: Spacebar not responsive

I've noticed the lower left portion of my spacebar is unresponsive, the rest of it is fine though.

If it were to get worse, I'd probably pry it off and fiddle with it before dealing with Dell.

Re: First time I turned on my Dell Mini... setup froze

I wouldn't expect the BIOS updates to give any noticable speed improvements.

To update, you just run a program; 910_a02.exe available from Dell support site.

Re: Ubuntu Mini Freezes

One browser window can easily cripple the machine, at least until the oom-killer, or user, kill the bugger.

I won't run Firefox without flashblock / noscript; stupid flash applets will suck the...

Re: Ubuntu Mini Freezes

I'd add monitoring applets to the gnome panel for ram/disk/cpu.

Too much activity on the SSD can really tie up the CPU. I've had a few occasions where I had to ctrl-alt-f1 to console and kill...

Re: 8.04 wireless issues

Have you tried using wicd, or iwconfig / wpa_supplicant from the command line?
wicd is probably easier, but replaces the gnome network manager.

Re: Ubuntu Mini Freezes

How long did you wait before turning it off?

Perhaps you ran out of memory, at which point the oom(out of memory)-killer should start killing processes to free up memory.

If it happens again,...
