Then it can still be used to scan downloads or files you are unsure about.
They do have portable versions of a couple of AV programs that will run from a flash drive under WinXP as well now that I think about it.

Definitely some non-invasive ways to skin this particular cat. -Thanks!

For media files, the definitive must have is CCCP. Everything you need.

Launchy - quick launch
Firefox - i'm too relient on this browser for good reason.
Roboform - keepass and all that other stuff is good but just pay for something that does it already, securely.
File Zilla - awesome.
Antivir free - greatest free anti virus
uTorrent - lightweight, web interface, awesome
Drive XML - backup/imaging software - absolutely awesome

Make a good PE Disk which has network support and get spybot, antivir, adaware loaded on that baby so if hard times fall upon your precious mini you can boot up in a PE environment and kill any baddies that may be causing you distress. Forget CD's it's super easy now to make them on USB drives.

Here's a good link to similar discussion that's a bit more lively!

Look out for Molly's stuff - very good!

AV always comes up but ignoring that for now!

Have lots of questions in this area:
1. Exactly what Dell "bloat" can be uninstalled?
2. Should Skype be installed to SSD or USB flash drive or C drive?
3. Re virus protection, what about AVG, SpyBot?
4. Open Office: uninstall MS Office first? Install Open Office on SSD, USB or C?
5. Does the mini do movies? Would be great for long flights. Assume the movie could be on card but what program to view it/them & where to install?
6. What software will run from card--specifically thinking about Quicken & Legacy Family Tree. Maybe those forums would be place to ask those questions.
7. What is best software to use to sync with Palm?

Appreciate the benefit of any experience with these questions--I'm not a techie at all & don't want to mess up this wonderful, essential toy!

Cool, a fellow genealogist! I am running Family Tree Maker on the Mini 9. What a great research tool for traveling to libraries, courthouse, cemeteries etc. Take pictures of source data and enter key facts directly into your file. I don't recommend running any app from an SD data- too slow. Put the apps on the SSD and your data files on SD. I upped the RAM to 2GB and my large FTM file runs great

Regarding bloatware I uninstalled McAfee (using Webroot because I have a license and it is running ok) , the bluetooth application (using generic windows driver) , adobe acrobat (using Foxit), Outlook Express (using Thunderbird), Windows Media Player (using VLC and iTunes). iTunes is bloated but I use it and mostly like it and it runs good with 2 GB RAM ( 1GB RAM was ok if I wasn't multitasking)

I turned off hibernation (getting 2 GB back) and all file indexing (Win XP and Google Desktop).I optimized SDHC for performance rather than quick removal. Thinking of turning off System Restore after I get a good disk image.

I've played movies on the mini with no problem, but I didn't try it with only 1 GB RAM

I haven't uninstalled Works yet, but I may switch to openoffice, because the Word, Powerpoint and Excel viewers are pretty large.

I use c-cleaner.

I uncompressed the SSD because the little bit of space wasn't as great as the performance improvement with it off.

Basically, I trying every performance tip I can find

running win xp sp3, office 2k7, onecare AV, vlc, ie 7, free pdf reader, skype nokia pc suite + dell bloatware still got 1.38 Gb left. Is that good? Like firefox, but Ie 7 is already there so left it on.

Stardock ObjectDock makes for a really clean desktop and it's free! Some may think it's cheesy, but I love it.

In terms of Web Browsers, Opera Web Browser is where it's at for me.

Also, rather than install and run a native media player - I think I'm going to rely on the Player to provide me with streaming music and avoid filling the mini with MP3s.

a couple more that haven't been mentioned yet.

msttcorefonts - I know it is Micro$oft but you can't live without verdana (but for goodness sake, lets leave comic sans in the last millenia)

meld - how does anyone deal with keeping local mirrors of photos / music / whatever in order without a directory comparison tool?

gnomesword - I am a pastor!
