Re: Installing XP Pro on the Mini9 / Driver Information - 01-21-2009, 08:38 PM
thanks for your quick response. i just found out that dell support will honor the warranty even though you install xp over linux and that they will even talk you through the install. i'm also anxious to see the new mini 10. if available in linux, it might serve my purpose better than the mini 9.
your profile says you have a 32GB runcore SSD. i tried to find out from dell what their 32GB SSD read/write speed is but they have no idea. any guesses as to whether or not runcore would perform better than dell's SSD?
some other questions...
1. can the mini 9 take 4GB of RAM and if so, who offers it?
2. any 3rd parties offer a better longer lasting battery for the mini 9?
3. i've never used nlite as i see that there's some discussion about it here on this thread. is this something worthwhile to integrate into my workflow? if so, how does it fit in?

2. There are posts about this in the upgrade forum.
3. if you have a small SSD you should look into nLite.
Old Config: Dell Mini 9, Black, 2GB RAM, 32GB RunCore SSD, Dual Boot Windows XP Pro SP3/ 7 Beta.
Older Config: Dell Mini 9, Black, 1GB RAM, 8GB SSD, Windows XP Pro SP3 with all updates.

will the install go without a hitch if i use a dell sp3 disk that came with another laptop? will it ask for a cd key? i do this all the time as my agency i work for has all dell equipment and the install never asks for a key as long as i have a dell disk in a dell machine. but ive read the mini isnt actually made by dell so im not sure if it will work the same. anyone try this?

I have upgraded to a 2 gb and a 32 SSD card in my dell mini. My mini originally came with the unbuntu program and I want to install window xp pro. After the initial window setup I keep getting a blue screen that says, "window has encountered a problem and must close to prevent damage to your computer." Can anyone help me with my problem?

My experience with a 4GB SSD Mini9 and XP Pro SP3 - 05-13-2009, 08:08 PM
I just wanted to share my experience installing XP Pro SP3 onto a 4GB Mini9. There was lots of helpful info on the forums, and some bad or superseded info as well. Also, I upgraded the RAM from 1 to 2GB before I did this.
For a source for the XP Pro SP3 I used an ISO for a Dell OEM version of that, reasoning that the OEM VLK for a Dell should install without probs on the Mini9. I found that ISO on the Demonoid. I just used WinRAR to unpack the ISO into a folder.
Then I downloaded the XP slim drivers for the Mini9 that Nunim on this forum helpfully assembled (http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/wind...m-drivers.html). As these are a bit outdated I replaced the video driver with the ones found on Dell's page (Drivers & Downloads)
and added a few that were missing - I think Bluetooth and battery meter? Can't recall.
Then I ran nLite on the unpacked ISO to shrink it. Initially I took someone's suggestion on this forum to use the Last Session.ini nLite settings from a copy of MiniXP that was also found on the "bay". I'll copy that Last Session.ini at the end of this msg.
This shrunk it quite a bit, and I also integrated those drivers mentioned above. nLite has lots of options, not going to go into them here - I chose unattended install and for computer type chose "ACPI multiprocessor PC" which I read was important. Also turned off Firewall, Hibernate, System Restore. The Dell OEM VLK product key in the ISO was correctly found and inserted, and I should say this program installed fine and passed Windows Genuine Advantage when I installed that.
Then I used WinSetupFromUSB_0-2-1 (found here How to install from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI - MSFN Forums) to make a 2GB USB flash drive bootable - use the HP Format Tool method to make it NTFS, works a lot faster than FAT. This program also copied the nLited (shrunk) installer files to the flash drive.
Then I restarted the Mini9, hit 0 and booted from USB, got a screen from the GRUB boot program on the USB key, and started the installer. Delete all the partitions on the 4GB SSD - there were 2, a Dell repair partition and the Ubuntu partition - delete both, then create new partition, format with NTFS (quick).
Once the "text mode" part of the Windows install finishes it will reboot and default to boot from the HD, where it will give you missing "hal.dll" error. Reboot and hit 0, select USB Boot, the GRUB booter will come up and choose "part 2 of windows install" or something like that.
Then it will grind away, took around 30 minutes. But all the drivers were installed, the resolution and wifi network all worked great once that was done.
After XP was installed I went in and via Control panel/System I turned off pagefile, which freed a lot of space. I think once I got rid of the pagefile, the XP SP3 install using the MiniXP .ini was around 580 MB.
The problem for me was that this Mini9 was going to run a few different pieces of software for scientific equipment, and one of those needed Microsoft SQL server 2005 and .NET3.5, which wouldn't install on this minimal version XP - some problem with WMI. So I had to go back to nLite and make a less stripped version, which ended up being around a gig in size and fixed the previous probs.
Hope someone finds it useful.
I'll put the nLite Last Session.ini file in the next message.

Here's the Last Session.ini file from that MiniXP install, if someone wants to use it - makes a functional XP install for most people, and good if you're hesitant to get into all the choices of nLite.....
