Well I successfully installed Windows XP over last night / this morning. I tried using my kluged together el cheapo CD/DVD setup but I was unsuccessful so I had to fall back on doing a bootable USB stick install. For the USB stick I used a Lexar 1GB JumpDrive JDE1GB-04-500 that I've had from work for a few years (the tutorials below suggest a 2GB drive but the 1GB worked fine and the install after nLite and the various scripts only took up about ~340MB on the stick).
I downloaded all the drivers from Dell's website and integrated them using nLite. I used the following tutorials:
nLite'd Windows XP on Eee - http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php
Install Windows XP from USB - http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/instal ... thumb.html
I slipstreamed XP SP3, as well as a critical hotfix update pack from the post-SP3 timeframe that I found on one of the above links. I also integrated all the drivers (did the multiple driver folder choice in nLite and picked all the non-AMD and non-X64/Vista drivers) and once Windows booted up all I had to do was install the Battery Meter / Wireless Switch application and all the devices were successfully detected (no yellow question marks).
For some reason Hibernate didn't get disabled via the tutorials above so I re-disabled it and also disabled Paging, and was left with ~13.5GB free (of ~14.3GB formatted).
Since I've been up (I finished installing around ~2AM) I've activated XP, and have been downloading updates and prepping/installing software that I use. It feels quite snappy - I'm rather impressed with it now. Especially since it can address all 2GB of RAM now. Networking is working great on my WPA2 protected WRT54GL.
