It depends on the size of your SSD as well as the memory requirements for the software you typically run.
Microsoft has published "Guidelines for Designing Flash-Based Ultra Low Cost PCs for Windows XP.pfd," which can be downloaded from "Multimedia" section of this page: http://www.microsoft.com/unlimitedpotential/ULPC.mspx.
In it, they discuss usage scenarios for small pagefiles or no pagefile at all. They also give instructions on how one can calculate an appropriate pagefile size given the memory requirements for the software they choose run. I hope this helps.

It also answers the question about turning off compression. (If you have >2GB SSD then turn it off as it will improve performance and reduce wear levelling).
Me, wanders off to turn off the pagefile.
