After re-reading the OP.
It sounds as if the audio drivers may be missing.
This is the one you're looking for from Dell if it is.

It appears that there are a few freeware volume indicator programs out there.

Don't know if this helps or not.

Those volume indicators come from the keyboard manufactures and not Microsoft. Check out who makes the Mini 9 keyboard and see if they have a patch file for it.
On a side note, I am glad I read this thread. I had not updated my desktop keyboard drivers. I went to Microsoft, because its a MS Wireless 2000, and downloaded the 64 bit drivers, and now I have the osd for my volume buttons for my desktop..

My Vostro 1400 has an OSD for Volume and Brightness. I wonder if the driver from the Vostro would do the trick?

I think thats the "quickset" program that does that, and unfortunately, it does not work with the mini (throws an error that its for the wrong system)

Re: Volume/Mute OSD for Windows...
Check my post in this thread....
Another option for people who are willing to install the drive space hogging ".net 3.5 framework"....

http://matt.malensek.net/software/docum ... /3RVX.html
It's skinable and the default looks like OSX. Nice lookng IMO
BUT: I prefer the microsoft keyboard driver myself.
(the .net framework combined with the 3RVX app, works out to at least 200MB of drive space so you can have OSD for audio. I really wish people would write code that's small... like they used to. :P )
For those who run other stuff that requires .net 3.5, it's a good option.
