Default Whats a free "Microsoft Word" clone with good spell check ? - 01-30-2009, 07:39 PM

Hi

I would like to have a simple word processor with spell check ,

small, simple like the old MacWord,

no need for all the bells and whistles of the full Word clones....

using XP home on a Mini with only 8gb SSD so need to keep it small

Thanks

just ordered Mini 9 from DELL outlet, 8GB SSD , Windows XP Home, I need to figure out external battery pack and when I get it strip out extra bloatwear, otherwise I know very little about computers and lots about old VWs

You might check out abiWord(http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable) which is lite freeware application that is MS-Word compatible. The install size is between 9-18 MB. And there's also OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) but that might be a heavier install.

I would like to have it on my computer so I can work when I am not on-line

I am thinking open office will be too big , I will take a look at abiWord,

When I think of all the things we did with a Mac Plus and a 800k floppy disc the bloatware everyone sells is crazy !

I downloaded abiWord on my home computer ,

its a very quick download because of its small size ,
but it seems to have everything I need , so I think that one has been solved,

There are also many other small scale programs at (http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable) and once I get my Mini I will be using a few of them

thanks again

It's really really sad. Microsoft could really strip down their Office files and make them fit perfectly for a Mini. Bloatware is one of my pet peeves. I recently discovered a gem online, but for obvious legal reasons, I cannot post it. I, of course, own MSOffice, but until a few days ago used Abiword for the Mini.

Why should Microsoft "strip it down" to fit on a machine that's not even in the typical Office users' demographic?

You can call it bloat, but when Office takes less than 1% of the TYPICAL hard drive capacity found in today's laptops and desktops, maybe you're asking too much of the Mini.

NewEgg has a version of Office 2007 Home/Student for $85--for three licenses. At $30/machine, I passed on the free OpenOffice to use an office suite I am thoroughly impressed with. And while Office isn't small, it fits perfectly fine on my SSD without making me forgo having anything else on there.

There are ways (nLite/vLite) to slim down Windows, which does have plenty of bloat to it.

I recommend free Softmaker Office 2006:

http://www.softmakeroffice.com/

It also performs much better than MSO (or OO) on SSD drives.
Installation occupies abt 40MB.

Demographics? Please explain your sources.

I'm just simply saying office without bloatware is a good thing.

I really don't understand your point of view....and besides that, if Microsoft is going to release a netbook version of Windows 7, then the next logical conclusion you can make would be newer, slimmer MSOffice.
