Default Best browser for the Mini? My $.02 - 01-20-2009, 11:37 AM

So I've been a die-hard Firefox user for quite a few years now. I installed Firefox on the mini and I was using it in both Ubuntu and Windows. I configured Firefox with the small icons, stripped out some toolbars and added the mini drop down menu to gain the most visible browser screen.

I played with IE again because it was required for my streaming Netflix. Reminded me how I dislike IE ...

I thought I would dl Chrome on the mini to give it a whirl. I played with it a little on my desktop, but I quickly went back to Firefox due to the better support/ packages available. Well, I discovered that I prefer Chrome on the mini for a couple of significant reasons:
- The maximized Chrome window shows me more of a webpage than the other browsers.
- I was tethering my iPhone and noticed a significant increase in speed with Chrome vs. Firefox. I understand that Chrome actually is faster in speedtests, but I never saw a real difference on my other machines. The difference was there with the mini.

Try it for yourself ... Unfortunately Chrome is only out for Windows at this time.

i also prefer to use chrome on the mini. the only add-on i ever really used for firefox was ad-block plus. hopefully someone gets that working on chrome soon.

I'm using Chrome due to how minimalist it is, and it was only after returning back to Firefox did I realise how much better the Search bar really is as an integrated system. I know I can do the same with Firefox but I don't like bloating it with lots of add-ons. Firefox takes far longer to start up for the first time (after system boot) than Chrome - significantly longer. Chrome takes under 5 seconds whereas Firefox can take anything up to 25.

To get around ads I have Privoxy running on start-up which takes up less than 2MB of RAM.

I use chrome on the mini but I've had it crash on me numerous times for some reason or another. I also use chrome on my desktop pc and have yet to see it crash on that one. I gave opera a try but it was a bit finicky with some webpages, then again so is chrome.

I initially installed Chrome and used it for about three weeks but ended up dumping it for Opera- only because (at that time) Chrome didn't have a full-screen feature like IE and Opera. Maybe it still doesn't. Haven't checked.

I was a faithful Firefox user, but for the mini, I am a big fan of using Opera. The Opera browser takes full advantage of using the keyboard to operate the browser. For example, using its spatial navigation, you use the cursor keys to scroll to links. A simple press of the enter key and your off. I find that I can go for quite a while without using the touchpad at all.

And there are minimal themes available, as well as my favorite, fullscreen mode .

Right now I'm switching between firefox and chrome. Even with Tiny Menu installed in firefox, chrome wins in terms of screen real estate.
That being said, I'm having a hard time living without Adblock Plus and the Foxmarks bookmark and password sync extension. I've also found Chrome to be a bit zippier on the Mini (although I haven't tried placing the firefox cache in RAM, as explained here, which might speed things up - has anyone had luck with that tweak?).

Off topic, sorta

I read you started using IE again for netlix live streaming.

You can use FF again if you opt in for silverlight

They say it is beta, but I havent ran into any problems, other than a few movies which will not playback with silverlight yet (I have found very few) and most of them can now playback with silverlight. Basically, its just a waiting game for those that wont playback.
