Just installed XP from a USB stick, took hours because of constant errors etc. but finally got a working one, then the USB loading the OS took an hour. Once ready, I've noticed such an improvement in speed. It's way faster than Snow Leopard and Ubuntu, and it's quicker than Windows 7. Although XP is 9 years old, it's very functional and runs exceptionally well on my 10v. I'm never changing the OS on this netbook, just sharing my experience. I've owned my netbook over a year now and it's never been this quick.

after time XP will get slower and slower they improved that on Win 7, 9 out of 10 people on this site say Win 7 is faster than XP.....XP is always fast in a new install over time it gets slower and slower....you will see...Win 7 doesnt do that it works with memory more efficiently than XP

XP only gets slower with more stuff you add, trust me I've done over 50 XP installs in my life ;D

Of course all OS's get slowed down over time, more daemons/services installed by programs etc., even 7 and OS X slow over time. I've done about 5 OS X (leopard and SL installs on my 10v) and they get slower with the more programs you have running in the bg. All I'm going to use my netbook for is video and browsing now. Of course there's the iPad but the iPad isn't the best solution for video and browsing. XP works wonderfully if that's all you do, which is what netbooks are made for. That's my testimonial.

Hi, I just got a DM 10v and would like to reinstall its XP OS. Unfortunately it didnt come with CDs when it was bought. But it has this I386 folder in the C: directory where you can find the windows xp home edition sp3 installer.

Please let me know how did you manage to install a winxp using a usb flashdrive.

I tried it by making a 4gb usb flashdrive bootable using an HP tool, then I copied all the the folder I386 from my DM to the usb. I managed to boot from the USB, went to I386 subdirectory and typed winnt.exe. The setup ran, the way it was copying the files seemed to take forever and when it looked like it hanged on me, I turned it off. When I turned it back on, it continued with the setup but gave me an error that it couldnt find EULA. I searched the USB drive and its there

I am thinking if there is a way that I can use the original xp installer files from my DM's c: directory and put it in a USB drive but make it run automatically like how a winxp CD installer works so that I wont have to run manually.

Would appreciate any help you can extend. THanks

there are files that you need that the i386 directory does not contain to reload windows

You will find that this is very common. I make it a habit to reinstall my XP computers about every two years or even less. Every time they are redone they come back just like they were brand new. Its a bit of a pain; but its worth it in terms of performance.
While using register cleaners and those type programs you can lengthen the slow down cycle; but you won't get rid of it. Even using the restore feature does not match the process of reinstalling the operating system to what it was when the system was new. I just redid my 1010 after owning it for about a year and a half.
It was like I just bought it. I will probably one day install Win 7 or get a newer system with Win7 (or higher) on it; one day; but not today!!!!!!! fdalbor
