Default Does the reinstallation cd ask for a key? - 10-07-2008, 10:21 PM

When reinstalling Windows XP Home from the disc that Dell gave you, does it ask for a key? Also is activation still required?

With other Dell notebooks, the reinstallation CD detected that you were installing to a dell and didn't require you to enter a key or activate.

I can only verify that when installing from a USB key, it does in fact require a key and activation, but I think when you install from a USB flash drive, it loses that OEM information.

yep.
I re-install it through a USB DVD-rom drive and it does ask the key anyway.

I wonder if you could use the OEM code that everyone with a Dell XP Home OS has. If you use Magical Jellybean Keyfinder http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.html it will report RCBF6-6KDMK-GD6GR-K6DP3-4C8MT as the key.

ALL Minis have the same Key on delivery. Inside, not on the back of the machine! My German Dell delivers the same key with Magical Jellybean Keyfinder. Only when you reinstall the OS, you use the key on the back of your mini.

That's the standard OEM key Dell uses on ALL XP HOME OS's I have worked on many Dell XP Home OS's and they all will report the same key. Google the key I posted above, you will see what I mean. If you are still running any stock Dell systems with XP Home run Jellybean and see what it reports.

I've not tried reinstalling from the Dell XP Home disk that you get with the system. I have however installed from a Dell XP Pro CD and this works fine, doesn't ask for a key either. So I can only assume that it should do the same thing with the XP Home Disk. Maybe I will try this at some point as I am planning on reinstalling XP with a stripped out version at some stage down the line

It does not ask for a key, the Dell OEM cds never do...

If you are not using a factory Dell CD, you need the correct oembios files in the i386 folder and the correct key (the one posted for example) and it will preactivate and work fine. If you do not have the correct oembios files, it requires the phone call, and thats where they want your key off the bottom to verify it is legit. This works with pro and home, I have verified on my systems. The oembios filesets are the same for pro and home. If you have a dell install cd from another computer it should work and preactivate nicely as well, just need to make sure it isnt putting a bunch of garbage on there as well. Dell isnt TOO bad about that.

I dont want to encourage any funny stuff, however this is all very common knowledge in the industry and when used LEGALLY is very helpful.
