Default mini 10 won't shut down or restart - 01-03-2010, 09:00 AM

When I try to restart or shut down from windows xp sp3 it gets to the screen that says "Windows is shutting down..." and stops there. The only way I have ever been able to turn it off is by holding the power button for a few seconds. This happened the very first time I tried to turn it off so I don't think it's anything I did. Anyone else have this problem?

you might wanna search the MS site, I think they might have a fix for that if I remember right...or maybe I am thinking about a hibernation issue....when you get old your memory is usually the first thing that goes...

I had that problem intermittently in my Dell desktop when running WinXp. I was never able to figure out why, alas. But upgrading to Win 7 solved the problem and unearthed a Trojan horse and zapped it (AVG 9 did the zapping).

actually, the OS probably will shut down at about 5 minutes later, but then the Mini's power light will stay on until you hold the power switch down for 5 secs. I, too, clean installed W7 over the XP and no longer have the problem

I think that's just the display shutting off. I plan on keeping windows xp as long as I can. I'm probably going to get a new hard drive anyway, so maybe this won't be a problem anymore.

maybe, maybe not. before I upgraded to W7, I did a Dell factory image restore of the XP that was original. after that, the Mini would shut down normally and quickly. after installing a few programs and updating drivers, the Mini would go back to a frozen "Windows is shutting down ..." screen. good luck
