Trying to Repair XP - 12-13-2008, 09:14 AM
Last night I shut down my Mini 9 (XP SP3), however during shut down I press and held the 'Power button' so it would shut more quickly. I went to boot into XP earlier and I previously got an error message about WINDOWS System 32 Config either being missing or corrupt, which I would need to repair with my boot CD (however I have no external CD ROM drive)
Note: My Mini9 is definitely in USB boot mode.
So I loaded XP onto a USB (via my desktop) using this method. However now when it boots, when I select Windows XP in the OS choice directory, it shows the XP loading image, then the screen goes black for a second and I get a very quickly flashing blue screen of death and the system reboots. I get the same result when trying to enter GUI mode on the installation USB.
However I can enter setup in text mode but I am very confused as to how I can repair my system now.
It loads fine and I select 'Repair', choose the Windows (C:\Windows) installation I want to repair and 'Logon'
Now I am stuck - it simply shows "C:\WINDOWS>" and I have no idea what to do next. There are no instructions or anything.
I would very much like to keep all my files, I have some work on the laptop which I wouldn't like to re-do if possible.
If this is not possible, would there be a way to 'Ghost' this broken image to a flash drive, change the broken/missing files?
I would really appreciate any help anyone could offer me.
