Default Windows XP on 32gb SSD - 12-06-2008, 11:17 AM

Hi, this is my first post here so I hope this is the proper location for this.

I recently ordered a Mini-9 and it should be arriving in a week or two. I ordered the Ubuntu OS with the new 32gb SSD. When I talked to the sales rep on the phone, they said that the reason that the 32gb SSD is available only with Ubuntu is due to WinXP not having an available driver for the SSD. Is this true? I have read through a lot of threads here and I see plenty of users using Windows, but how many use Windows AND the 32gb SSD? As for more specifics, I can't say right now as I'm still waiting on the unit to arrive. But was anyone else told this when they ordered?

Haven't seen anyone on here with the dell 32gb drive yet... Though I highly doubt a company like stec has a 32gb drive that isn't supported by windows.

Don't rely on the sales or tech departments to give you accurate info. They just spew bullshit to get the sale.

That sounds like misinformation to me.
You should be able to run that drive just like a 16GB one with no special anything.

I have to agree, with very few exceptions don't take tech advice from a sales person.

Run your 32GB SSD freely and in good health.

I read that Microsoft won't allow them to ship XP on more than a 16Gb SSD (but will allow XP on conventional HDs larger than 16Gb).

Can't find an official source for this now, but it would explain why Dell isn't offering the 32Gb with XP.

I ordered a 32Gb SSD for my mini even before it arrived, as I need more than 16Gb storage for what I use the mini for. I'm running XP and had no issues with it.
