Portable Applications: An option for Netbook Windows users. - 11-25-2008, 06:05 PM
In short, they are programs that run from some sort of removable media (memory card/USB drive) on a Windows PC without leaving much, if any data or files behind on the host computer.
(I've been carrying and running a fairly complete suite of applications on a USB flash drive at work and on various computers for years and it's worked out extremely well.)
Mini owners running Windows on smaller SSDs could certainly benefit from this as they could store and run many, if not all of their programs from the SD card slot or a USB drive of some kind!
There are some drawbacks, like slower launching times for some programs, but generally speaking it's a very reliable way to handle your apps.
PortableApps.com is a great resource for information on these applications as well as downloads and even their own pre-packaged suite of portable apps!
The Portable Freeware collection is also a great repository of portable applications.
For my own suite of apps I use a launcher called PStart, as it's easily configurable.
