Default How to: Re-image your Mini9 from Dells image for your system - 12-10-2008, 04:51 PM

These directions will walk you through getting a copy of the dell image for your system, making a bootable flash drive, moving the image to a bootable flash drive, and making it where it will reimage your computer automatically, in similar manner to how the Dell Ubuntu image on the Dell FTP site...

Angry Re: How to: Re-image your Mini9 from Dells image for your system

I apologize for not seeing this, my subscription for updates to this thread seems to have died on me. Part number 59221 is a general part number.

I also have a XPS system, got those SRCDs the same way. The trick again is telling them to go look up the term, They are considered an alternative to a full reinstall.

one side note, I can only speak to US policy, so it may be a little different elsewhere (for example, I know there is at least one country where they cannot be sent at all, as sending a part that has been opened before is illegal)

IF there is anyone in the states having this issue, let me know, and I am willing to chat in on it to get them sent to you, if you are willing to let me give out the session ID (makes it where other Dell agents can read the chat, will NOT give anyone else authorization to speak on your system). To do so, I would need the following: The service tag, the name of the original owner, and the address where you need them shipped.

(For obvious reasons, please DO NOT post that information here. IM me, and I will go from there.)

Any time, davico. So everyone else is aware, another set of SRCDs on the way out. If you request them, and they ask about the session ID of someone who has them, use 24230856. For those of you who are interested, with davico_rosello's permission, here is the chat session transcript, with only parts related to personal privacy changed. So you are aware as well, the statement about the failure rate of SRCDs is exaggerated. I have had 4 sets over various systems, and all have worked.

Your session ID for this incident is 24230856.
Time Details
12/19/2008 08:36:34AM Session Started with Agent (Harmit_######)
12/19/2008 08:36:38AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Chat Support. My name is Harmit and my rep ID number is ###### .How may I assist you today?"
12/19/2008 08:37:34AM Jason Worthing: "I am chatting in for a friend. He is in need of his Software Restoration CDs (SRCDs)"
12/19/2008 08:37:52AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you for the information. Ill be glad to assist you. Please give me 2 to 3 minutes to pull up your account information."
12/19/2008 08:37:58AM Jason Worthing: "Thank you."
12/19/2008 08:38:10AM Agent (Harmit_######): "You are Welcome."
12/19/2008 08:40:39AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you staying online. I appreciate you patience."
12/19/2008 08:41:03AM Jason Worthing: "No problem."
12/19/2008 08:41:28AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, may I know what is the issue you are facing with the system and we have a option available called PC restore in the system which can reinstall Windows for you without the CD's."
12/19/2008 08:43:13AM Jason Worthing: "Unfiortunately, PC Restore is not available for the system in question. The hard drive on the Mini 9 is to small to hold a PC Restore Partition. The need is mainly precautionary, in case the need to reinstall windows comes about quickly (Windows Failure, replacement Hard Drive, etc).
12/19/2008 08:43:45AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you for the information."
12/19/2008 08:44:10AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, do you have a external optical drive to use and reinstall Windows ?"
12/19/2008 08:45:16AM Jason Worthing: "There is one available, should the need arise, but my friend who I am chatting in for would not have the 4+ hours necessary to do the full install in an emergency case, hence why we are requesting the SRCDs."
12/19/2008 08:45:58AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Okay, Jason we will send you the CD's for the system , is there any other issue you are facing ?"
12/19/2008 08:46:34AM Jason Worthing: "That is the only issue we are facing right now. Just to confirm, you are sending the SRCDs, not the windows reinstall disk. Correct?"
12/19/2008 08:47:35AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jaosn, the Software restoration disk are the Windows reinstallation Cd's ."
12/19/2008 08:48:11AM Jason Worthing: "The disks I am requesting are different. Please do a search for SRCD. That is the disks I am requesting."
12/19/2008 08:49:33AM Jason Worthing: "It is PC Restore on a CD"
12/19/2008 08:49:48AM Jason Worthing: "Or in this case, several CDs/DVDs"
12/19/2008 08:49:58AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, we will send you the SRCD however want to notify that lot of time the CD does not work and we will send you the Windows reinstall CD as well in that case."
12/19/2008 08:51:13AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Can you please confirm me the shipping address."
12/19/2008 08:51:16AM Jason Worthing: "I understand the risks. I also understand that when 9it is used, all data on the system will be lost. The Windows disk as well would be appreciated."
12/19/2008 08:51:33AM Jason Worthing: "Shipping address is <Shipping Address>
12/19/2008 08:51:35AM Agent (Harmit_######): "You are Most Welcome."
12/19/2008 08:51:38AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you for the information."
12/19/2008 08:51:41AM Agent (Harmit_######): "May I place this session on hold for 2-3 minutes, while I create the dispatch for you and provide you with dispatch number."
12/19/2008 08:51:55AM Jason Worthing: "Please ship them to davico_rosello, not me. Yes, I can hold."
12/19/2008 08:52:20AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank You."
12/19/2008 08:56:32AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, Thank you staying online. I appreciate you patience."
12/19/2008 08:56:43AM Jason Worthing: "Any time."
12/19/2008 08:57:24AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, I understand this can be upsetting and I apologize for the inconvenience however for this system SRCD is not available as the image is not created for these system and you will need to reinstall Windows from the CD."
12/19/2008 08:57:39AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Then install the drivers from the support site or from the CD's."
12/19/2008 08:57:47AM Jason Worthing: "Niot so. I already have the SRCDs for my system, and they work fine."
12/19/2008 08:57:55AM Jason Worthing: "I also have a mini 9"
12/19/2008 08:58:10AM Agent (Harmit_######): "May I have the service tag please for the system."
12/19/2008 08:58:46AM Jason Worthing: "For what purpose? It 9is irrelevant for our discussion, other than the fact that I have them and they work, and it is also a mini 9."
12/19/2008 08:59:29AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, I will check the SRCD that was shipped with the system and we will dispatch the same for this system also."
12/19/2008 08:59:37AM Agent (Harmit_######): "As the image is generic ."
12/19/2008 09:00:04AM Jason Worthing: "It is the same part number found in the article, part # 59221"
12/19/2008 09:01:26AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Please allow me a minute to consult with my supervisor."
12/19/2008 09:01:45AM Jason Worthing: "Take your time."
12/19/2008 09:02:15AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank You."
12/19/2008 09:02:48AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, we are shipping you the SRCD and the other CD's also on the address provided by you, allow me another minute to finish the dispatch."
12/19/2008 09:02:59AM Jason Worthing: "Take your time."
12/19/2008 09:03:14AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank You."
12/19/2008 09:04:14AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, I will like to apologize for the confusion and if you have any other issue with the system will be glad to help you."
12/19/2008 09:05:12AM Jason Worthing: "That will be the only issue I will have for you today."
12/19/2008 09:05:21AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Okay."
12/19/2008 09:08:43AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank you staying online. I appreciate you patience."
12/19/2008 09:08:53AM Jason Worthing: "Any time."
12/19/2008 09:09:01AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Jason, this is the dispatch number #########, Thank you for choosing DELL Technical Support and allowing me the opportunity to assist you. Have a great day."
12/19/2008 09:09:10AM Jason Worthing: "And you!"
12/19/2008 09:09:14AM Agent (Harmit_######): "Thank You."
12/19/2008 09:09:40AM Session Ended

If you don't send them something back you may be charged $0...

Be a nice guy and send back a pack of gum or something!

They did the same on mine, for the return. Keep the label for just in case for the next month or so, if you do not get an email reminding you to return something, then your good. If you do, respond to it and ask them what your supposed to return They will look at it, and reply 'Nothing, nevermind' - The agent who set up the dispatch accidentally said something had to be returned, which is why you got the label. But you never have to send back CDs they send to you, so it was a mistake.

To anyone interested or needing more references, here's another session id for my successful chat session to receive the SRCDs: 24298806

After finally agreeing to send them to me, they said they would follow up with a call since they were absolutely convinced that the CDs would not work.

I received my SRCDs after first being sent the DRIVERS CD. It takes a bit of work, but thanks to the posters on this forum, I have them in hand!
