Default considering windows from ubunto - 05-18-2009, 10:24 PM

Newb with a Mini 9 2gb ram, 8gb hd, using ubunto 8.04. Looking for a reason to switch to XP or 7 and the fact that I can't watch Youtube or most video now has me leaning towards windows. Will the switch fix my video woes and will I be able to function on 8gb hd. Any thoughts would be helpful. Love this forum, learns lots.

Hi mcpics, I am not a windows user, so I will not try to talk you into it , but I am happy to help you try and fix the video problem in Ubuntu. The Dell version of Ubuntu 8.04 that comes pre-installed should play Flash videos no problem. Can you tell me more about the problem?

One possible fix is to re-install the flash plugin. Open a terminal (under applications->accessories) and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Once you get it reinstalled, you can also try using the VLC plugin - which still uses Flash but processes the video stream with VLC in the background. Makes for a much smoother video viewing experience.

sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc
