Default Optimum vLite setup for Windows 7RC on 8gb ssd? - 05-12-2009, 05:53 AM

Anybody know where i can find something like this? I need enough space for Office 07, AVG, firefox, and other basics. I essentially want enough space free so that i can stream a movie online and not have a popup saying i'm running low on memory.

There's a pretty good guide here: rickatnight11.com » Blog Archive » Install Vista on Dell Mini 9 (USB)

But I wouldnt think you would have much luck with office 2007 as well unless you cut it down quite a bit too. You may want to consider buying a bigger SSD?

you should get a larger ssd, I got a 16gb for $40, you can get a 32 for $80. I plan on getting a 32 to run os-x and win 7, right now I have my original 8gb with XP sitting on a shelf, while I run os-x on the 16 currently.

It only takes a few seconds to swap the ssd, so if you need a dedicated setup, its REALLLLLLY easy

well i dont have any room to buy a new ssd (poor college student here), and my current office install is about 270mb because i've only put in powerpoint, word, and onenote. My entire program files folder is roughly 1 gb. And how well does that Vista guide work with 7?

You don't need a new SSD.

I have basically used vLite and then turned off hibernation, reduced pagefile to 256MB. Now I have 3.25GB free on my 8GB SSD (Usable space on SSD only showing 7.05GB). I am sure if you are more aggressive than me, you can squeeze more out of vLite.

Make sure you dont strip too much out of vLite, you will find things stop working, like the installer for instance.
Try and avoid anything that you would class as essential for the system, the guide link I put up above is pretty good and the posts afterwards give some useful pointers.

On my mini after installing Office 2007, firefox, acrobat reader, itunes, blackberry software, Kaspersky, starcraft (original and broodwar and the installer exe's) and VLC my windows directory stands at 6.22Gb. Program directory is at 3.13Gb.
(Apologies, I didnt check the size of Windows straight after install but the post which I followed as well showed 4.33Gb of space used for the Windows installation.)

Along with the aformentioned software and a bunch of docs and films my 32gb drive shows 16Gb used and 12Gb free.

I used the guide by Rickatnite and turned off hibernation and reduced the pagefile to 200mb. The trick was to install all the software on a SD card. An 8gb ssd and an 8gb SD card was plenty to run Windows 7. I just upgraded the SSD to 32gb, but I still used vlite for the install.

Used the rickatnihgt guide as well. After installing win7 pro, switching hibernation and pagefile off, and a few small apps installed (hsdpa app, adobe reader etc), I have 3.7gb free on an 8gb ssd.

Feels a bit faster than XP too, once i switched off everything unnecessary (search, firewall etc). Battery life better too, for some reason - used powersaver mode, set dim to 1 minute (that's a really nice feature btw, you can still see what's on screen at a glance, without needing it to be on full brightness). I'm getting about four hours out of it now.

Only problem is if I get 2GB ram, then hibernate will take 2GB. At present with 1GB ram I have ssd space to use it, and it would be worth having for speed reasons (pretty usable atm still though).
