Default Win7 on 8gb SSD? - 04-21-2009, 05:47 PM

I have a couple questions...

1) do i want to install the Windows 7 32bit or 64bit? I am not sure what the Atom chip is.

2) Can Win7 fit on an 8gb SSD?? I do have a 16gb SDHD Card as well.

3) how is performance on the mini with Windows 7 vs WinXP Home?

The Atom in the Mini is 32-bit only. I recommend 16GB minimum. You can get it to install in 8GB but that's very tight. Performance is very good - better than XP Home in some ways.

If you use Vlite to make the install smaller by removing unnecessary components, it will fit fine on an 8gb drive. Mine is running without a problem. The only thing you have to do is get an SD card-at least 8gb to install all your programs on, otherwise you will fill up the drive quickly. After a clean install, I had about 3.5 gb free.

I installed Win7 build 7077 on my 8Gig SSD. I removed the ei.cfg from the SOURCE folder prior to install and select Home Premium (be warned that the Win7 Ultimate CD-KEY from the public beta does NOT work to activate. So you get 30 days to try it out). After the install I had less then 1Gig left (and shrinking.. I'm guessing that indexing and other background tasks). I then disabled the Hibernation file and swap file (I have 2Gig of RAM). Removed a few things from the "Turn Windows features on or off". After that I had about 1.5Gig left. I also have a 16Gig SDHC card for programs and downloads.
