Do you happen to know how to create a bootable XP disc if you already installed Win 7 and decided you want to dual boot?

I searched on-line and found a few programs that were supposed to do it for you but none of them worked :-/

NEVERMIND!

I installed Vista instead, Win 7 allowed me to install it from within windows (which it wouldn't with XP).

Default Easiest way to prepair the Win7-Install-USB-Stick on an XP - PC - 09-22-2009, 05:35 PM

Download the following programm.
WinSetupFromUSB_0-2-3.exe
Google is your friend
This tool will make everything itself. U only need the Win7 Iso file.

After installation change in bootoptions to "boot from USB" and finish.

I only tested it with win7 but I am sure it also can do XP,Vista,.....

Tried that program, didn't work. Thanks for the advice though. Even with the implication that I was too lazy to search

Question Why so complicated?? - 10-15-2009, 01:50 AM

Why are you guys making this more complicated then it is? With the RC and RTM version, all you need to do is copy/paste the content of the DVD/ISO onto a USB drive. (probably better if formated in NTFS)

Thats it! No need of "tools" or "hacks". Worked like a charm for me on several laptops (including my Mini9)

Cheers!

That doesn't make the USB drive bootable.

This is the method I always used going all the way back to the early beta tests of Win7. Just be VERY careful in step 3 to pick the right drive or you could wipe your data. I've never had a sngle issue with this method in over 20 installs. There are plenty of methods out there, and I only list this as a possible alternative for those having issues with other methods.

- Get a 4GB USB Drive and plug it in under Vista

- Click Start –> type CMD and right click Run as Admin

- Inside cmd, type and enter the followings:
  1. diskpart
  2. type “list disk” and you will see all connected disks and numbers
  3. select disk X (X being the number of the usb disk )
  4. clean
  5. create partition primary
  6. select partition 1
  7. active
  8. format fs=fat32
  9. assign
  10. exit
- Open your drive under explorer, copy all files from vista/7 iso to the usb drive.

- in Bios, set to boot from USB and have fun.

DELL Vostro 1720 - 2.4Ghz - 4GB - 500GB - Windows 7
DELL XPS M1330 - 2.4Ghz - 4GB - 500GB - Windows 7
DELL Vostro A90 - 2GB - 64GB SSD - OSX

Thumbs up Mini10v - Windows 7 Easy install - 11-01-2009, 01:27 AM

I looked and looked for easy ways to install, using the Win 7 Upgrade Disc, on my dell mini10v. Finally, I tweeted Adrian Kingsley-Hughes of ZDNet; and his response was simple: Copy the disc contents to a usb (I used an 8GB SanDisk), insert the usb into your netbook and run setup.exe.

Yeah, right I thought.

I tried - the contents of the disc copied effortlessly from my Dell Desktop dvd drive to my usb stick, then I punched it into a usb slot on my mini10v; highlighted setup.exe, and that's all she wrote - installed in no time. And Gawd does it look and run sweet on my mini.

Makes you wonder why there are so many complicated processes posted around the web, when simple solutions always work best.

Props to Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, or the_pc_doc on twitter!

You "highlighted setup.exe" how? You must have already had Windows running, right? All you did was a normal upgrade.

Yes - my mini10v was a winxp version - it was running. After I copied the upgrade disc to my usb stick, i just popped it in, went to "my computer" and clicked on setup.exe.

It really was easy; and man my netbook is ROCKING on 7 - a lot of the improvement is cosmetic, but I guess that is what it's all about. Certainly makes my mini10v something that I want to grab and use at home; and not just when I travel.

This did not work for me. It didn't boot. I shrunk the .iso with V-Lite. Whenever I boot from the USB it says:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Missing operating system

Could it have something to do with me running OS X on the SSD? PLEASE HELP!
